I just found a little baby texas cichld at the store and couldn't leave without him. I was intreseted becsue he is the only type of cichlid in the United States. He seems to be aggressive, does anyone know what fish i should pair it with?

I've got two texas cichlids. A male and female. They aren't very agressive as they live with different metynnis but they are agressive with each other though.

The true texas cichlid is hericthys cynoguttatus - this is found in the states, this is increasingly difficult to get hold of. You may have picked up the Blue texas (carpinte) which is a mexican fish.

Care is fairly similar. The both grow to approx 10/12" as adults they would require a tank 48 x15 x15 minimum - either for a single fish or a bonded pair.

The are probably not considered as nasty as several of the other big central amican cichlids - but they can still be a handful. Usually fairly well manered until the get about 6-7" at which point ity is easiest to not mix them with other species.

In the meantime to avoid lots of aggression, I would get a few more of the same species and grow them up together to get a pair. Unless you have a big tank I woud avoid mixing with other cichlid species and would keep with larger barbs/tetras and catfish (ones that wont eat the cichlids and vice versa)

If you have a big tank some ciclids you could try for a while would be: jack dempsey's/red hump earth eaters/ conicts/ nicuraguence (spelling)

I think he means it is the only naturally occuring species in the states. I think it occurs in the rio grande in Texas - it also occurs in mexico.

there are a few populations of introduced cichlids like oscars/chanchito/tilapia etc etc. Living in parts of the states
