Is it true that the PH drops in a marine tank when the lights go off? I've been told that it can drop to 7.8

yes and lower, if you have a sump with cheato in keep it reverse lit to the tank and it should keep it more stable, i keep my sump lit 24/7 and have a stable 8.3/3.33

dissolved oxygen assists in the increase of PH and as this builds up due to activity of photosynthesis by micro and macro algae , ie lights on and off, lights on higher ph and lights off lower ph

Thew algae releases CO2 at night causing the ph to drop the best way to deal with it is keep the alkalinity high 4-5 meq and/or use an algae scrubber. I use a DSB with algae scrubber on top and it is lit 24 hours a day. I have no such problems with my ph.
