First of the symbiotic algae gives the vorals their colour or at the very least has a huge influence over it.
The symbiotic algae is effected by light and nutrient level.
First off what lighting are you using including kelvin rating.
Secondly what is your nitrate level.
Thirdly what is your phosphate level.
Another thing of note is that corals will take up the most effective symbiotic algae for their environment the brown colour is normally the result of excessive nutrients or low intensity lighting. |

hi alan i have a giesmann light and it run on three 250watt bulbs at 14000kelvin and are on 5hours a day all my water levels are all ok |

What is your nitrate level it may be okay but could still be the cause.
Also whats the length of the photo period this could have an impact as corals would only get full wack from the sun for about 6-8 hours not the 12 hours we often subject them too.
Also what do you feed and does the water have a yellow hue this is the result of organics not necessarily nitrate or phosphate. |

5 hours is a bit low i have mine on for 10 with t5 1 hour either side of that |

I should have explained in more detail max illumination 6-8 hours but you would still want t5's on for a couple of hours either side. This would replicate more accurately the level of illumination that would be experienced on the reef. My tank is subjected to 12 hours of max illumination which is probably excessive. |
