have been to a few lfs looking for live rock i have been offered both live rock and live larva rock,in terms of helping with the filtration in a marine tank do both do the same job,or is one better than the other,thanks in advance for your thoughts |

live rock is the best thing to go for all ready mature filter , i would say lava rock although varys from piece to piece generally is to dense , you are looking for rock that is porous as possible , if you can afford it the go with liverock if you got a bit of money but cant go all with live rock then put some lava rock or even better alfagrog (big bits) down as base rock , basically where your not going to see it.hth a pic of one of my old convicts below

live lava rock is basically tuffa rock and there is a problem with tufa in that it is to permeable and porous resulting in insufficient anaerobic conditions to remove nitrate resulting in nitrate production not removal. Go for the live rock better by far and go to a good supply such as www.stm-shop.co.uk take a look at the live rock they sell and compare it to the stuff in your lfs. |
