Hi
recently set up our first marine tank went to a local shop who told us all their livestock were easy to look after. after browsing for our first items for the tank we came away chuffed with a small white anenome with purple tips and a feather sea cucumber about 1 1/2 ft long. went to a more established shop on the evening and was told sea cucumber could wipe out whole tank if it dies and grows to a large size was told it would be ok with liverock and sand now being told this may not be enough to feed it. also been told anenome wasntthe best choice for a beginner. advice please.

Arghhhh

Don't depend on shops for advice get a good book and have a good read and also don't buy anything unless you have researched it yourself first, marine reef keeping is easy providing you are disciplined in your research of everything you want to keep and keep to a strict stocking maximum and stay within the capabilities of your set up.

I would look into taking the seacucumber back to the other shop as far as the nem goes providing the tank is live rock based with adequate lighting it stands a better chance with you than it would if you tried to move it.

If the nem starts to dicentegrate remove it immediately with the cucmber lift it into the bag very carefully the last thing you want it to do is excete its guts in to the tank.

thanks Alan
the anenome has move away from the flowand tucked itself partially under some liverock seems to be ok but will keep a close eye on it we removed the cucumber last night into a smaller tank we set up with a piece of liverock and some live sand from the main tank plan was to use it as a hospital and quarenteen tank. were annoyed the shop told us both of these were easy as they new we were new to the hobby. will see if we can return the cucumber later as now we know as much as we do dont want to pass it on to another novice meanwhile if anyone else feels they can offer it a home (pick- up only) and knows enough to keep it happy let us know. meanwhile after making our first huge mistake we now know to stick with the plan we had for our reef tank and not to impulse buy just cos a shop says its ok.

called the shop asked if we could return sea cucumber they said this type wouldnt polute water if it died. it was just to big a risk. came home with small blue tang like dory in nemo film. tense hour tho warmed the bag in the tank for half hour then as i slowly added our water egg cup every five mins to the water in the bag. the little thing lay on its side nightmare as i finally netted it in the tank it was fine gonna call it dave after my hubby he is a bit of a hypercondriac too.
anenome seems to have picked up and fed well tonight. tric link helped a lot dont know if it will survive but a trip back to the shop would have been to stressful for the poor thing so following your advice leaving it alone and waiting. with a separate tank at the ready in case things look bad again thanks again all
