I don't think that your tank would be big enough fou for some odballs, yiu'd probably get away with malawis.

i agree with bogsta to a certain point but "oddballs" arent necessarilly tank busters, jonie was asking about those tiny fish that swim up ya penis the other week,id say that was an oddball! if indeed it didnt leave ya with a pair of oddballs

What do you mean by oddballs? Leaffish/puffers/driftwood catfish/riverine cichlids/predatory characins etc - it’s a big groups containing hundreds of fish with different requirements.

The problem with malawis is that they are easy if you :

A) Stick to more peaceful species. (your Rio is not long enough for more aggressive species)
B) Overstock
C) Only keep the same type of fish and do not mix in other cichlids from america etc.

They can of course be mixed, but if you want to garentee success - do it by the book, and they are quite simple.

So: can you get an external filter as well,

Do you have access to a good range of species and ideally a knowledgeable seller.

Can you afford malawis - you need quite a few at one time and they are not cheap - you cannot just add one at a time.

Will you be happy not trying other species that are not compatible.

Go for malawis then! - When I had them, getting a good range was difficult, it got very dull not being able to find anything a bit unusual in the shops

not really what I would call an oddball but you could breed a small driftwood cat called tatia perugiae stunning little fish. There would difinetely be a market for the young as well.
