Hi. Well as you know I got my Bargain of tank and fish. The people cant bring it to mine as there car is off the road so Im having to arrange for transport on Saturday.
What I want to know is how do you move a tank and the fish from one house to another? Should I bag the fish and transfer the tank completly emptyed of water? Or would this not be good to lose all the water? It isnt far between our houses at all (about 8-9 roads away) Just ive never had to move a set up tank let alone one that includes fish and dont want to mess anything up. |

Ok thanks. I will need to find a suitable container to transport some of the water. cant see driving with a bucket of water and it not going all over lol. |

Ask your lfs if you can borrow as many gerry cans as they can find, keep as much of the water as you can. This will help a bit towards avoiding new tank syndrome. Completely empty the tank.Bag the fish and then pack them in a poly box. Put any substrate in buckets, or whatever you can get, also any tank decor. Try and get the filter up and running asap, that way you won't loose too much bacteria. If it is a canister filter, then join the in and the out and keep it running. And last of all
make sure you have your wellies and plenty of towels!!
Good luck. |

I think it is not necessary to keep a filter running. just empty out the water and close it up to keep wet. the air in it will keep the bacteria alive. If the filter media is sponges etc just put them in a plastic bag with air they will be OK. Bacteria on a mature filter is quite hard to kill if it doesn't dry out. |

buy a new dustbin at b&q for a tenner
take it to the house and fill 1/4 with tank water and filter medium (clean the filter meduim first)
add fish and dispose of rest of water.
put tank in car
put bin in car
go home and put all back together |

also bacteria on a filter will half every 30 mins without water running over it. |

Alright DB, I just wanted to use more words! I thought I was right about the filter. We have an adapter for the cigarette lighter in the car that means you can plug a 3 pin plug into. The only problem is it says that you can not use it to run a microwave or hairdryer!!
That's a pain when you're late for work and decide to wash your hair before you leave and to cook your Oats So Simple on the way |

Thanks guys. Been and got containers and fish bags We have arranged to collect them at 10.30 in morning so they will empty tank at 10.20 and keep fish and the filter running in the container until then. The whole move will take only 4 mins, then account for setting up again which shouldnt take long so Hopefully all should go ok Cant wait now. |

Move went really well, think I was worrying to much lol. Tank set up and fish settling. Have to say these fish are damm huge. Infact there is 1 comet that is 12" head to end of tail, 1 black moore which is about 8" and one fantail I think it is that is 7" My fish have never reached this size before, Had 1 goldfish for many years that grew to 9" maybe 10"
I asked her how she cared for them, water changes, feeding etc... and what she told me shocked me, she said she Never part changes the water Never declorinates it if the level needs topping up never puts anything in there at all and feeds them 4 times a day. The filter was not really big enough so Ive added a new better one but left that one running aswell. She has had these fish 3-4 years, how the hell did they survive this long with untreated water and no water changes and get that big. Bugs me really cause Im a stickler for doing everything by the book and my fish always die |
