I just joined this forum and would like to introduce myself.
I have been keeping tropicals since I was 6 year old and have had discus for the past 12 years. I have kept quite a few tropicals ranging from guppies to arrowana and finally ended up with Discus and L046.
I joined this forum to help other fellow hobbist who have problems with discus and inturn to learn some myself. There is always new stuff to learn in discus keeping...
If you have any questions/queries, you can post it on the forum and I will try my best to answer me. Alternatively, you can pm me and I will answer them.
You will have to bear with me for a while as it will take time for me to get used to the "regulars" of this forum.
Hope, we can all share the wealth of information available on this forum. |

welcome to the forum chen (francaise aint it) ? just a quick question, my blue turks have, over three spaws, progressed to raising free swimmers, but then one night they decided they were hungry so i seperated the remaing dozen fry. Should i have left them to it, or have i done right seperating them |

chen or francis does not matter. People who know me call me francis while others call me chen
There can be a few things that will make the parents to eat their fry:
- When the parents feel that there can be a risk for the fry
- If they feel that the spawn is small and would like to try for a bigger spawn
- When they are ready to spawn again
I am not sure what was the case with your pair.
It is quite common practice to keep a dim light switched on while the parents have fry. If the room is dark, the parents naturally feel that there might be a risk for the fry and eventually eat them.
I would personally not recommend seperating the fry from the parents for the first 2 weeks. |

i would say you did the right thing because with any cichlid once they start eating healthy fry , they will munch thier way through , lots of young fish do this it sometimes takes them 4-5 trys to get it right , cichlids/discus will eat and pick off 1 or 2 fry now and again if thier is a problem like deformaty or disease , they will probably try again in a week or more , give them some live bloodworm or some other live food do a little water change and this normally get them going again |

yes i like your pidgeon bloods (personal stock) very nice |

Thanks sazzy. It is actually not very difficult to have the same quality of fish in your tanks. Just need to get some basics right, thats all and off you go.
Wayne, I agree with you. Parents can identify deformed babies and will eat them if they are know that their babies are going to be deformed.
This is not technically proven and hence did not comment on it.
Also feeding them white worms would really help as bloodworm does not contain much. Live artemia and earth worms are good too. |

Chen it is then sounds like the small spawn problem then, she hasn't spawned again yet and there were about 50-60 fry. The light was left on and the water perameters are bang on. I did notice they weren't too keep on the idea of letting them latch on to feed from them |

Wayne, you mean the super chequerboards.
Yes, they are in deed one of the good fish I have seen for a long time.
I had to steal them from my breeders personal tank. He was growing this fish up for the show in singapore and germany. Only a few people are given access to his personal stock and I am one of them. |
12-02-2007 10:31 by wayne
|
yes the checkerboards ,you jammy dodger , are you keeping the to breed them? |
12-02-2007 10:40 by ChensDiscus
|
Not exactly.
I am not intersted in breeding as I have been there and done that.
I love the challenge of growing show quality fish. I have a personal show tank where I have fish starting from 4" till 8". They get a 70% water change every day and a lot of attention is given to them.
As mentioned earlier, I am not a breeder and when I get a pair from my show tank, I usuall sell them off. Hence once in a while you get some show quality pairs being sold on my website.

Hello Chen, It's good of you to share the knowledge you have gained with us. Can I ask you, what are your thoughts are on Beefheart as a food for fish? |
17-02-2007 00:04 by ChensDiscus
|
Beefheart is good for the fish. Infact, they tend to grow faster and are much more healthier when fed on beefheart.
If the fish are fed beefheart, there is very little chance that the fish will get stunted.
Hope this helps |

hello chen. im thinking of going into discus but as it is a big step from the fish i keep now i am researching about them on the net. ive been reading about tank sizes for them today and realise that the tank has to be atleast 18" high but ive read that it can be 12" wide and then on another it says atleast 18" wide could you please tell me what is correct as i have a spare 48x18x12 tank but i dont want to use it if its no good for them.
i have also read that they need worming on a regular basis, so could you recommend a good wormer.
cheers mick |
17-02-2007 00:48 by wayne
|
the oply thing if you over feed beef heart ,you will get viel tailed fish , seen it happen to sevrums , fed every day on beef heart |
17-02-2007 12:21 by ChensDiscus
|
Mick,
The miimum depth for the tank should be atleast 16", but 18" is preferably. Also the width shuld be a minimum of 18". 12" is too small for them to grow.
Wayne,
If your theory is correct, then most of the discus fish should have been viel tailed as most of the breeders feed beefheart to their fish.
I have grown fish from 2" to 6.5" only on beefheart without any problem.

17-02-2007 14:50 by Angilaruk
|
Hiya ~~
Please excuse my ignorance, but what is viel tailed?
*Smiles*
Angi |
19-02-2007 00:39 by wayne
|
viel tail is where fins are elongated , and he fed them only beef heart everyday , maybe has a different affect on severums or they were just inbreds who it was going to happen to anyway |
