Ok guys and gals, what do you reckon to this..its gonna be a long write up so that i can explain...

I have just, well an hour ago, had the nastiest sting off an anenome that i have ever had in 10yrs! 6/7 stings down my thumb, pretty much hurt like a wasp sting for about 5 minutes then eased away,to what feels like a nettle sting.
Now heres the bit i have never seen before!!
I got the sting taking the top off my FX5 to replace the rowaphos. As some of you with theseunits will know, they are completely sealed units (from light),it was in a dark cabinet, black piping so no chance of even the smallest ammount of light getting in.
The anenome was about 3to 4 inches long, translucent bodied, definately not an Aiptasia (or at least i havent seen one like it), it had a flourescent green and yellow central body and mouth area. Tentacles extended around 2 inches, translucent, couldn't see any obvious tentacle markings..other than very slight whitish colouration to the tentacle ends.
The pump had been drained for 25 minutes prior to me being stung.well hard little chap!!
Ok sorry to go on...lol.. any ideas guys?
I'm still struggling with the no light bit, and the strength of the sting...

Ok,I have searched the tank and there are definately no more in the main system.
The only place i can think it may have come from, is the live rock rubble in the pump, theres about a kilo, the only recent addition to the set up..
I know they deep water drag net for this stuff sometimes, low light levels that deep too..

well as you described it , it has a flouresesnt green / yellow central body, def not aip as they are not zooxanthellae, you will only see the green/yellow on zooxanthellae nems (light loving), it could well of come out of your live rock rubble in the filter, my advice would be move it to the tank as you dont have a sump, and see how it goes, it could poss need a good feed, sounds like you have a great hitch hiker.Others may disagree.

Anenomes feed in at least 3 ways:

1) photosynthesis
2) catching prey including micro-life, in tentacles
3) inflating and deflating - taking in some organics with the water (although mostly using the deflating to remove waste).

Never heard of a case quite like this one though. As you say, probably in the wild there are deeper water species living in little if any life.

in laymans term what yanton said, but aips and majos are NOT zooxanthellae (photosynthesis) internal algae, as they dont glow green,

Thanks Trik and Yanton...

Any ideas on the type...the one i got out of the filter is dead (owing to the 25 minute drying out it had.
If i get another in there i am gonna get a photo..should keep us entertained trying to identify it!!
Didn't think about a photo at the time, i was way laid with the pain!!

Ed,
Definately an anenome...trust me on that one....
Bristleworms can give a kick but this one had me running for the anti hystamine cream... wasp sized sting!!
Definately a tentacle ridden anenome..lol. (i can laugh now the paralysis has eased....lol)

Could have been a fireworm not all bristleworms are equal a normal bristleworm is like brushing up against a cactus whilst a fireworm if umlucky could put you in hospital if you have an allergic reaction fireworms are nasty as he ll.

Back to the nem possibility though aiptasia survive on both photosynthesis and catching prey and they can also surviv with just one of the options available too. Equally there are many anemone species that are hunters only and do not use any zooxanthellae.

If a nem is able to hurt us do we really want it in with fish that it in all likelihood will sting and kill. Equally what would have happened if the thing got stuck in the impellor of the FX5, tank wipe out would be a very likely out come as all the nematocists would be released into the water column. Had this happen with a condy lost half my fish the rest were not to happy either aside from the clowns that weren't to bothered. Ideally when you handle anything in a reef tank you should wear gloves but I have to say I don't and I regularly get stung by bristle worms and it hurts badly.

Alan, thanks for the reply, it was definately a Nem, i know what you mean about Bristleworms, and fireworms, and you are right they dont half pack a punch....
I have been stung by jellyfish off the african coast, and that was more what the sting was like..very powerful.
I normally wear surgical gloves if i know theres a hazard, but to be fair the last place i thought there would be a nem was under the lip of the fx 5.
I have however, stripped the fx5,sterilised it and thrown the LR rubble. The next blighter that i see (if i see one again) that resembles that nem is "gonna have it"..Joes juice style. I agree with you, i definately DONT want them in my tank. They put aiptasia to shame!!
As for the metal halide thread, i'm sticking with 14k's..
Thanks to all,
Mark.
