Really pleased with how it's gone, I have been lucky so far, only had one day when the water suddenly went off and had to move the fish out of there quick and put them in Nigel's tank. They all survived except for one anenome. No slime algae or other probs (yet) fingers crossed. I was lucky enough to be able to fill the tank with mature water from drummerducks tank + all his live rock + his filter. I think if I had not done that it would have taken a lot longer than 3 months, for it to cycle. |

Looking good one thing of concern though is the polyp extension isn't great do you have any curculation pumps in there a tank that size I would want to be going for a turn over in tank of at least 20 times the tank volume per hour ideally 30 times per hour.
Also watch the caulerpa around the button polyps it is already clear that the polyps are stressed by the caulerpa which will quickly smother them.
goodluck with it though it has the makings of a stunning tank. |

Hi - I've just taken on a 2nd hand 5' tank, can you tell me how you cleaned yours before use? Thks terry |

|
Terry,
White vinegar or similar mild acid will remove most deposits on the tank, just make sure its all rinsed well afterwards.

Terry - just used plain water, elbow grease and a new Jcloth. Stubborn marks were removed with a new green pan scourer. |

darren - I thought that it had been set up about 3 months but in fact, it has only been running for 6 weeks! Time flies when you're having fun! |

Alan - I had just been messing about in the tank, that's why the polyps are not fully extended. I have 2 external filters, a protien skimmer and 3 powerheads running. |

That would explain it. Watch the caulerpa doesn't take over though great in a sump but can get way out of hand in the main system.
Just make sure the total in tank water turn over is at least 15,500 litres per hour or more. This will prevent dead spots and detritus build up that would lead to gradually building phosphates and nitrates. Also make sure you get the grazing pressure up as soon as possible.
I would want something like 50 turbos and 50 dwarf blue leg hermits in there to keep it clean. |

I have taken some of the caulerpa off of the piece of rock it was on, with some roots on, and tied it with some fine fishing line to another piece of rock and put it in Nigel's tank. Saves me having to buy him a pressie for his birthday on Saturday Do you think that it will 'take'? |
21-02-2007 15:10 by Alan
|
Almost certainly it is the weed of the sea a certain species of caulerpa is making a right mess of the med they think it got out of a public aquarium possibly in Monaco I think any way its killing the med watch out for it going sexual as it releases a mild toxin when it does this. Its not a problem in a sump as it is lit 24 hours a day so provides a guard against this unpleasant occurence if it starts to go brown remove it quickly before it releases nutrients into the water. |
