I've got 12 Congos in all 4 female the rest male, the males are always displaying at each other keeps their colours good. I did have 14 but lost 2 males a couple of months back for completely unknown reasons bit gutted really I haven't seen Congo's of this size in the shops since I got these so haven't been able to replace them. |

Wow great tanks. In the 2nd picture, whats that smokey looking stuff
Love the pandas, ive just bought another 3 of them. Is it just Pandas in the 10 Gallon tank or is the cherry barbs in there also?
Im well into my tropicals now and wanting to start another tank. I like Angel fish and wanted to focus around these. What are good tank mates for Angels?? Wont be a while though but thought id research again lol. |

Most of the serious fish are still there still got all the mochokidae the fish you can see are just the ones that don't hide.
I had a disaster with freshwater rays and lost a lot of the enjoyment I had for the hobby so I have gone back to basics with these.
Keith they would be spectacular if I had the money firstly the 4 foot would be a 9 footer by 4 by 2 for a group of p14 rays housed with a shoal of 20 adult discus!
I would also some how squeeze a 1000 gallon reef in there with an under tank sump instead of the over tank that I currently use.
But as I dont have thousands to throw at the hobby only less than £100 a month I have to make do and manage my very tight budget. About half the cost of my marine tank is covered by coral frags. Currently desperate for some grazers but have no money so hoping to exchange some frags at the weekend I have a toothbrush replcing turbos at the moment I have just upped the number of fish and through lack of foresight I forgot to get the grazers in to cope with the additional algae.
Oh well! |

Andrea C that smokey looking stuff is air bubbles a lot of the fish in that tank are riverine (those you can't see) and appreciate the high rate of gas exchange and flow.
I turn over the total tank volume about 8 times an hour low by marine standards but quite high for you average large fish community tank. The filters could handle a tank 4 times the size of this as well.
Tank mates for angels would be medium sized tetras like bleeding hearts black widows and the like not serpae tetras these can be fin nippers avoid any fish smaller than black widows as large angel fish would predate on them.
Go for some nice catfish too take a look at the woodcat family, I particularly like tatia perugiae and the milkyway woodcat latin name escapes me.
You could also keep corys with these as the tank would be larger go for a shoal of 10 sterbai or something like that.
Size wise for angels go for a deep tank of at least 18" depth. Also over rate the filters the fish will thank you for it. |

Wayne the algae on that little tank is 3 years worth pretty good going I think front glass cleaned when necessary I leave the back as a natural source of food for the ottocinclus.
Marine tank is sparse because I rehomed a pussey coral that filled the tank and completely reaquascaped it plus I have added more fish it has gone through a major up heaval in the last 6 weeks and as yet has not restabilised.
Water quality:
Ammonia nitrite nill
nitrate <0.02 ppm
Alk 4 meq/l
Calc 450-500
Phosphate <0.2 ppm
I do have a problem with pink coralline algae but it has no bearing on water quality for the fish which is my priority the coral beauty I have is about 6-7 years old.
With the money the whole tank would be enclose so all you could see would be the main tank. I would add over 60 grazers to the tank 40 turbos the rest hermits and I would probably add a calcium reactor to save me a bit of hassle.
I have the knowledge Wayne just lack the money. |

You don't have to have big expensive fish to have a nice tank. Go for some of the smaller tetras, but in a big shoal like congos or rummynoses, etc... |

If cost is the issue theres absolutely no problem it is very cheap to do un upstream sump.
In all it cost £100.
From a hobbyists point of view it is quite interesting seeing all the life in the sump its something often over looked by hobbyists. Ive got some huge bristleworms in there too. |
