I've got a juwel tank that measures 40x16x12 and have got 17 in there. But they are aggressive nasty lttle cichlids. |

Its really a bit small for malawis - normally I would go for a longer tank 36" minimum, but as it has a good volume you should be ok if you are careful about species selection.
The easiest way to keep them is to overcrowd them copared to normal fish - For a rio 125 I would recommend 12-15 fish as adults.
So you will need beefier filteration - an external would be great.
If you are careful with specvies selection and keep stocking levels high there is no reason they should be particularly aggressive to each other - but don't forget they are cichlids.
I would stock with any of the following:
Labidochromis caeruleus -
Labidochromis sp. Hongi
Labidochromis pearlmut
Iodotropheus sperengae
Melanochromis cyanorhabdotus (maingano)
Melanochromis joanjohnsoni (experatus)
Psuedotropheus lanisticola
-------------------------------------------
I would avoid:
Ps. Livingstoni (kenyi) - generaly peaceful, but large and can be a problem in small tanks
Any other melanochromis - generally hyper aggressive in small tanks
Crabro - Huge can be a menace in small tanks
Ps. Esterae - red zebra - peaceful but large |
