Ok, I bought filter aid yesturday as ive read on forums it is meant to be good. Followed all instructions bang on and added it. The water turned a yucky brown but I didnt worry as I read it does and then clears very fast. So how come its just over 24 hours later and the water still looks really really bad!! What the hell has gone off and why??

there are too much so-called chemical today suspose to do miracles for your aquariums today and it just messed the fish about best method to have a proper extarnal filter and a 10% waterchange once a week and the fish will be happy and off course much less stress for the fishkeeper

sure it wasn't black water extract?

Test your water to make sure all is ok providing it tests okay and the fish are fine there is nothing to worry about and the colour will pass.

Whats black water extract

Tested water and all the readings are good.

Should I leave it to eventualy clear or do a part water change?? Im not using it again, I mean ffs its says makes water crystal clear, mine looks like a frigging swamp now Infact im going to take a picture and contact them with a not so nice complaint.

Black water extract mimicks the conditions that fish would have in rainforests where a great deal of leaf litter is present it turns the water tea coloured.

If the water tests fine and the fish are fine I would not be in any hurry to do a partial water change until the usual one is due no point in stressing the fish for cosmetic reasons.

If I have reason to believe my filters need a boost or if I am adding a large number of fish such as when I added 14 Congos to my 100 gallon tank I use stress zyme or cycle don't trust anything else but have never had any problems with the above both are a bottled bacterial culture.

Many poo poo the stuff I do not as I have had fantastic results with the stuff and have nver suffered new tank syndrome since using them.

hi andrea,if your water tested ok why did you even bother with filter aid,i would certainly agree with alan on the stress zyme as i have used it in the past.

I used filter aid to polish the water in that tank as it had a slight murky look.

Alan thanks for explanation. Maybe the colour remained like that then as there are plants in there. Will leave the water as it is and keep check on it.

Thanks.

Sorry not murky as as in off colour but slightly cloudy like dust particuls floating about, filter aid is supposed to clump them and trap them in the filter to polish water.

andrea is this a new set up,because then the slight murky water is probably just that the filter has not matured enough to clear all the nutrients out of the fresh water you have put in the tank,i have just had the same problem with a new 5x2x2 that im cycling now,i used two brand new filters and had no spare used media to put in them,it took a week for the cloudiness to go

Not brand new set up no. Its the 5ft tank I got with the 3 fish. The filter was established and I saved and used 50% of the original water when they were moved to mine. So really it was like a 50% water change at the time.

if it looks 'dusty' then put some filter floss in your filter. that should remove most of it. hopefuly it will clear

I tried filter wool before though on an internal filter, just slowed filter down, hmm saying that I havent tried it on the external filter. Will have to look where to put it in the external filter, its a fluval 305.

give it a go. the reason it might have slowed down the filter is because it gets blocked realy quikly. give it a try. zooplus hav it. probs about 4 quid for it includin postage

I still have some. How often should it be changed then if it gets blocked quick?? Mine was slowing down every 3 days max.
