would corals survive and open up if nitrates are at 80ppm or would they not be well if at all living

are u using ro water for water changes and top up and have u got any live rock as this helps keep nitrates down but if the corals have been in that water a while cant see why they wont open.

It is possible for corals to adjust to this and some succesful reefs have nitrates of this level but it is far from ideal. If corals were able to slowly adjust to it they may well be fine but the symbiotic algae would change to a form that can handle the high nutrient load and as such all the corals will get a brown colouration.

As a max I would say 25 ppm is ok but 0 is always the target level.
