They are a nice to have but a really good nice to have, the steriliser eliminates water borne pathogens and keeps green water at bay.
We have one on all our tanks |

We have two UV's, one in the commumity tank, and one in the breeding tank. Fantastic things, water is crystal clear, and like k.o.d. says, they eliminate water borne baddy's

I'd recommend them, i have a tmc 30w on a 100 gallon reef tank, as previously stated, good for keeping diseases at bay/from spreading, helps with alga control...i wouldn't be without it..

i have 2 30 watts on are 8x3x3 and i dont get so much algae plus i havent had to treat tank with medication so i say yes they are good if you go for one dont let the water go throgh to fast the slower the better and have it so its plumed at the end of the filter |

Yes, yes and yes. As others have said, they kill pathogens, ie white spot. Don't have the flow rate too slow as this will also kill your 'good' bacteria, check the unit for the correct flow rate. |

I have 2 tmc 30watt on my central filter , they work fine providing you change the bulb on a regular basis . should be changed every 6 months or so or they become burnt out and dont do the job very well |

The only problem with UV's, especially if used long term, is that the fishes immune systems tend to relax somewhat as the normal pathogens in the water are destroyed. Basically the immune system has little or no work to do in manitaining anti-bodies against diesease that are'nt there because they have been destroyed by the UV.
This is OK as long as the fish are not then transferred into normal water. If there are any little nasties, that non UV fish could easily cope with, the UV fish are very likely to succum
I saw something like this happen to a Koi Pond, it was heavily filtered and each filter had a UV.
For some reason the guy decided to get rid of the UV's and after a short time the fish started coming down with all kinds of illnesses, right to the point they started dying off. He immediately put the UV's back and in a short space of time everything started to clear up.
Maybe coincidence, but his explanation has always stuck with me. |
