hi mate
1 filter floss and phos / carbon
2 sounds right
3 as long as you have plenty of flow
4 not unless you can get 20miles out to sea.

i would scrap the t8s and either get t5s or metal halides.. i have had this problem and nothing will grow under t8s in a reef tank |

Put nothing in the 405 the live rock and the skimmer will handle all filtration. I would suggest putting a pouch of rowaphos in the 405 from the get go though but no other media at all. Also check the flow rate is right for the proposed UV sterilizer.
Lighting wise go for T5's this will give you a far greater choice of stock.
Your tank is about 55 imp gallons so go for 30 kilos of high grade live rock.
As far as maintenance goes live rock is the best option but I am a little unsure that marine would be your best choice if you are away for such long periods you don't work in shipping or on oil rigs do you nearly got involved in all that malarky myself but I didn't want to give the fish up.
As far as to much live rock no I don't think you can put to much in but you must make sure the flow rate is high enough if you intend to squeeze 50 kilos in there up the flow rate to around 50 times per hour using tunze type pumps not neccesarily tunze though there are cheaper alternatives.
Any one left in charge of the tank will need to be as preficiant as you are in maintaining the tank. i.e. water testing and not just nitrate I mean calc alk ph nitrate phosphate. They will also need to know how to increase calc alk etc use a refractometer and deal with any potential disasters such as fish dieing beneath the 50 kilos of live rock. |

cheers for the replies. alan i work on a ship that deals with the oil industry mainly saturation diver's .I know it is 3 weeks away but it also gives me 3 solid weeks at home . i have kept a discus set up succesfully for the last 3 year with extened periods away from home.her indoors has in all honesty had 1 or 2 mishaps but is quite good with the discus now.i have kept fish as long as i can remember but this is the first time i will be dippng my toes in saltwater. i am thinking about setting up in about 6 weeks so i am trying to get as much info as possible for me and her really we will both be novices.so once again thank's to everybody for all the help regards steve |

As long as you misses keeps up with you in terms of learning and she is willing keeping marines won't be a problem. |
