Can someone tell me how hard it is to keep a mandarin in marine tank and what exactly is needed ie how to feed seperately. Should it be done with a baster. All advice welcome. Would really like to try as they are fascinating creatures.
thanks

What you realy need is a very mature tank, with lots of live rock which the manderin can graze on. It is a slow methodical feeder and will not do well in a tank with greedy feeders that do not give it a chance. They will slowly move around looking for copeods which mine love, they may try small live or frozen foods. The hardest part is finding one that is not thin in the lfs because most are kept in tanks with no or very little mature live rock. I did not gett mine until my tank was 18 months old and well matured and they are doing well and are no trouble at all, but the hardest part is getting one that is feeding i think, but they are great fish. |

Thanks Larry, for info I have a 125ltr tank with approx 13kg live rock so far which is really colouring up n icely, but intend to put at least another 5 to 8 kg in. I take it you can never have too much live rock.
Many thanks for your info and will definately look into getting a mandarin
ps where in the country are you based. I am in London a place called Raynes Park

I am in Bucks so not to far away, my manderin is same size tank but i have about 40kg of live rock and you are right you can't have to much, but as you know you give the lfs £30 and come home with 2 or 3 bits of rock that sems to disappear in the tank. How old is your tank what have you in there? Larry |

Tell me about cost of live rock, gold is cheaper. I have placed adverts trying to buy LR, but no answers yet.
Very new marine keeper, tank is only 12 weeks old.
I have 1 dwarf bicolour angel
1 regal tang will have to get a bigger tank in years to come for him, 2 percula clowns, 3 chromis and 1 bicolour dotty, also have 2 claener shrimp, 1 fire shrimp and 3 snails and 1 crab |

You might be able to get some on e bay ther is always plenty there but you have to collect, Your tank might be a bit young for a manderin and a few of those fish will graze off rocks as well, and as I said the manderins are slow feeders, but sounds a nice set up for only 12 weeks old it takes some of my tanks longer than that to cycle so you are doing well. Larry, thanks for the info and yes the tank is coming on nicely, will try and get you some pics sometime.
I might still go for a mandarin.Would be prepared to feed with a baster until he gets established. Just find everything about marine fascinating, I just enjoy the lot water changes etc so would not mind feding the mandarin by baster at all. My wife thinks I'm crazy, I have never spent so much time in the dining room and the kids are with me just sitting there watching the tank, saying that I spent a lot of time sitting watching tank when ther was only rock and water in there, how sad is that |

All done it mate and we get worse you will sit there and get excited when you see a bristle worm or a new little bit of plant life we are all sad people. Then you spend your weekends going to all the lfs and driving 50 miles to buy a fish because it's £2 cheaper than locally |
