My angelfish are developing excess slime. I can see it when they swim at a certain angle. It looks like a thin white build up from the upper gill area to the tail and a small amount near the anal fin. Does anyone know what this may be and any treatments? It started to appear after i treated them for a fungus. The fungus disappeared, but know this excess slime has moved in. I NEED HELP!!!!!!! |

your not having much luck are you at the moment Kribman! If it's slime disease use interpet, they have a particular remedy for this and its worked for me and others in the past. Research it on internet as well before buying or adding meds. If its slime it will not likely be restricted to just one fish (in my experience) its quite contagious |

what type of disease is it? Fungus or bacteria? |

slime is a parasite IF its slime disease, check the fish, if its slime disease, watch carefully for atleast 20 mins non-stop, the fish would mostly likely "scratch" or "scrape" against something atleast once.
it MIGHT just be a build up the fish's natural slime coat for another reason, but i am not sure what causes this.
Is the fish scraping against objects, but you need to watch continously |

Kribman
HOW ARE THE AFFECTED FISH BEHAVING??????
Are they scraping against stuff?
If it's Slime Disease, this will be acting as an irritant on their skin |

kribman, you sure they haven't laid eggs somewere angels i believe are the same as discus in raising young and produce excess slime for the youngsters to feed off i may be wrong (i usually am these days)....but if their not doing as jim says and acting irritated then take a look around the tank. Saying that, if it's a community tank, chances are the eggs are gone anyway. |

Netty - Uarus and discus fry eat slime produced by the parents - Angel fry dont.
Jim Can you tell me what slime disease is? Do you mean velvet.
If so this can look a bit slimy.
Fish may produce excess slime as a response to a paracite. So I would probably treat for an external paracite. |

the fish aren't really scraping on anything. they are enthused to see me and are always demanding food, (dont worry i feed them plenty). anyways, no sraping. but it started with two fish, then one died, then just one had it, now another of my angels has been develpoing slime, is this a response to wter quality? I change about 25% out of my 55 gallon every week. Would it be wise to just treat them for a parasite anyways? Can i just treat all four of them together along with some tetras? |

when i first started trops one of my dwarf gouramis got ecess SCALE lol slime and i tried treatment upon tretment etc. then i tested the water and i had a reading of ammonia and the fish had been trying to protect itself. it was a new fish but all the others were fine. good luck tho. wild guess but test the water now. even if u did it last weekend or woteva then its worth doin it today. hope the fish survives |

WE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH A COUPLE OF YOUNG OSCARS, ONE DIED IT SIMPLY DIDNT HAVE THE STRENGTH, THE SECOND ONE HAD GROWN MUCH FASTER AND WAS WAY STRONGER,THE BUILD UP WAS NOT VISIBLE
SIDE ON BUT SHOWED AT ONLY ACUTE ANGLES,THIS IS OFTEN A REACTION TO WATER CONDITIONS,HE FLICKED OFF OF STONES TO THE POINT WHERE HE WAS DAMAGING HIMSELF,WE POPPED HIM IN A BUCKET OF TANK WATER AND TREATED IT WITH SALT (LOTS ) AND POND DOCTOR ANTI PARASITE AT 30 TIMES DOSAGE RATES(THE SALT KILLS BACTERIA AND REDUCES THE TOXIC EFFECTS OF NITRITE AND NITRATE)LEFT HIM FOR ABOUT 45 MINS (DONT LEAVE YOUR FISH IF IT GETS JUMPY OR DISTRESSED)POPPED HIM AND THE WATER HE WAS IN BACK IN THE TANK (NONE OF MY FISH WERE GOING TO REACT TO THE SALT OR MEDICATION AT THESE CONCENTRATIONS) AND HE HAS BEEN RIGHT AS RAIN EVER SINCE |
