Red Devils (as we all no are mixed RD/Midas)
Flower Horns (who knows what are in there bits of everythink!)
Blood & Jelly Been Parrots
Striped Sajica (Sajica/Con)
Yellow Tailed Catfish (Red Tail/Tiger Shovel)
manaconda (Festae/Jag)
people dont have a prob with the "normal" X-bred fish so why the big deal now?
i'll find some pics of them in a mo......
when people post pics of there tanks with parrots in them people dont say "kill that thing"
or if some1 postes a pic of there pride and joy FH people dont say that should of been used as a feeder when it was small, they say wow nice fish, that FH is nice, them BP's are bright and $h!t like that
i say if it happens so what, see a fish you like have it dont like it dont have it!
4 all the RD/Midas out there you can still get a pure RD or Midas if you wanted 1, they have been of mixed breedings 4 years and years, the odd 1 or 50 home Xbreeding are nok going to kill the fish keeping world
THIS IS JMO (dont all jump on me i have a bad back ) |

The main problem. is the risk of cross bred fish being sold as pure bred. As is often the case of Convict/spilurum/sajica hybrids and flowerhorns being sold as trimacs.
Since the fish live a long time - by the time they go through lots of hands it can be difficult to identify hybrids, which can then contaminate pure bred stock.
It is not something that occurs very often in nature. It tends to happen in nature only when populations are artificially introduced or 2 species/populations are forced together by mans activities.
So althogh most species can be obtained as pure stock still. Due to habitat loss and war in certain countries, This may not be the case in the future.
So personally I would rather see tankspace taken up by pure species to keep a good genetic base rather than hybrids, which although attractive, don't provide any thing we can give back. But of course they do have a place for many people. Just my feelings

Great pics Bolty! my daughter would love those jelly been parrot fish, do they stay coloured for long?
Interesting topic and controversal as well.
As already stated by some peeps the hybridisation occurs naturally in the wild.
Happens a lot in our own UK waters too.
Plaice/Flounder hybrids
Roach/Rudd hybrids
So long as the hybrids are sold as hybrids and reputable breeders keeping stock of their fish, then there shouldnt be any problems or confusion. |

hay D.R them fish are dyed
i have no knolage of dyed
fish at all!
you could read up on it, not
sure where you would get any dyed
fish from as i'v never seen any
in the flesh, wether it in other
peoples fish tanks or LFS stock,
but then i'v only been in the hobby 16years!

cant stand died fish, dont get them, my views on the matter....dont deliberately cross breed fish, if it happens then so be it, but deal with the young ones your self, dont sell them on or give them away. |

i kept fish when parrots first became available ,what an uproar,if people at that time had spent as much time controlling the way fish were treated by importers and collectors as they did going on about the rights and wrongs then the hobby would be improved today.
man has been modifying fish in one way or another for generations,if the big catfish crosses help as food fish for third world countries
then why not keep them as pets ?
i would love a nice red tail cross ,but cant seem to find any right now. so the ladies fish interbred as long it is made clear to anyone who gets the fish what they are or may be it is hardly a crime, dying fish on the other hand should be |

I totally agree with DR and Big Cats - There is no problem if they are labelled as such for the life of the fish. The problem is this does not happen and Hybrids are sold as pure species in many cases.

As I have said before I haven't bought one yet but a while ago I did see a nice leather one with a rocking leather foot stool.
Dyed fish should be illegal end of, it amazes me that gm fish (the glowing danios) are illegal but fish tatood or dyed are legal although it is illegal to produce these tatood or dyed fish in this country thankfully.
As far as hybrids go it is something that should always be discouraged when possible and I do not think suppliers should breed hybrids however providing if sold they are clearly marked as hybrids and not as a new species as often happens I do not see the problem but it is always down to the purchaser carefully researching all fish they intend to keep before buying. |

I have been against hybrids for the reasons listed above, finding decent true cichlids is hard enough without having to wade through the mutts that are being advertised. I have bred hybrids myself by mistake, I didn't know the a male Heros appendiculatus would breed with a female Hypselecara coryphenoides. These never made it out the door though. Looking at some of the pics above, in particular the manaconda, when you have Parachromis friedrichsthalii or Parachromis loisellei or even Parachromis motaguense, then I don't really see the need for the hybrid? Each to their own, but not for me. |
