I thought I would give breeding betta fighting fish and would like some advice from you guys/girls.
I purchased what I thought and was labelled as a female (pink in colour) a while ago when it was quite small. As the fish has now grown and is much larger, I purchased a male fighter with flowing long fins. I put the two in a tank together but kept them divided so that they would get used to each other and to see them start showing interest.
The thing that I was surprised at, is the pink 'female' is the one that has built a bubble nest and I thought that only males did this (hence now questioning the sex of the pink 'female'). The fins on the pink one are short, the belly is rounded, hence I thought that it was egg laden and ready to breed. Any suggestions??
male fighters build nests so if you are completely sure the female built the nest then simple reasoning would suggest it is male?? could the male have built it did you witness the building?
both will blow bubbles as i bred them before, i wouldnt say though that females build bubbles nests though, drop the water to around 6" and its usually best to have a bare bottom, this is because when they spawn, the males can gather any eggs that fall out the nest without swimming down a foot and rumaging through gravel. Also have very little current on the top, preferably none. half a pothethene cup works well on the top of the water to breed in, alternatively have plants in the tank for them to incorperate into their nest, as for males and female, you have to remember that two male fighter fish will fight! so unless theres alot of aggression between them i would say you have males and female fighters
