We run an 8' marine, 7 1/2' marine, 5' tropical, 3' marine, 5' cold water, 3,500gl pond, 1200gl pond, 3 tvs, 3 ntl set top boxes, 900cm oven, dishwasher, tumble dryer, freezer, fridge/freezer,a vivarium, games machines, 2 computers, that works out at £3.95 a day. We are on a key meter and they send us a statement telling us how much we use per day. |

If you take the following as a guess
1. heaters 2 x 200w, probably on for 50% of time = 200w
2. lights 2 x 30w flourescent on for half day = 30w
3. 2 large filters 2 x 40w = 80w
4. uv guess at 15w
all together comes to around 325 watts per hour, in three hours you will use 1 kwh @ 15.33 pence (think this is about average not sure really?)
so in 24 hours cost would be around £1.22, so taking a month as 30 days somewhere around;
£35 per month
this is only a guess, heaters will be on less in summer more in winter obviously, also if its in a warm room etc etc |

I get through about 250 kw a month running 3 tanks.
If you are running a 4 foot freshwater tank it won't be to bad.
Its my reef tank that costs a bomb with its 300 watt lighting.
As far as the heaters go I would not expect them to be on for anymore than an hour in every 24 hours in a well insulated centrally heated house.
To work out the consumption find out the wattage of everything and multiply the wattage for each piece of equipment by the amount of time it is on for.
So filters will be on for 24 hours a day lighting say 8 hours a day heater I would assume 1 to 2 hours per day. Plus any circulation pumps and air pumps again these will be on 24 hours a day.
Once you have this figure for a 24 hour period multiply it by 365 then divide it by 12 this will give you the average annual consumption for your tank month by month.
Then multiply this KWh figure by the price per unit of your electricity supplier that will give you an indication of cost.
My tanks cost me about £23 a month to run consuming between 250 and 250 KWh (units).
Hope this helps. |
