LATEST NEWS
The first formal suspect in the investigation into the abduction of Madeleine McCann says he has been made a "scapegoat".
Robert Murat spoke for the first time since being questioned by Portuguese police as Madeleine's family prepared to step up its international campaign to find her.
The former property developer said he would only survive the ordeal if Madeleine's abductor was caught to clear his name.
Efforts to that end will step up a gear when Madeleine's uncle and aunt John and Philomena McCann lobby MPs and Lords in parliament to support their cause.
Portuguese police said they did not have enough evidence to formally arrest or charge their suspect.
Mr Murat was questioned while his house, just yards from where the four-year-old was snatched from her bed, was searched by forensic experts.
Speaking off camera to Sky News he said: "This has ruined my life and has made things very difficult for my family here and in Britain.
"The only way I will survive this is if they catch Madeleine's abductor.
"I have been made a scapegoat for something I did not do."
Mr Murat's mother's villa, at the end of the road which leads to the flat where the McCanns were staying when the youngster was snatched, was one of five properties in the area of Praia Da Luz which was searched.
Despite the intense focus near the flat where they are living, waiting for a breakthrough, the McCanns have carried on with family life as normal.

how can you say they only have themselves to blame! They have a child missing, you cant begin to imagine what they are feeling, whatever the circumstances there is a family missing their daughter and the utmost priority is finding that little girl, not laying blame! |

it is irresponsable to leave a child and i do agree with sazzy too they shudnt of left her in the first place i just hope she is safe and warm |

To be honest the best chance of finding an abducted kid is within the first 24 hours after that I'm afraid you are looking for a body.
One thing I will say about this Murat, apparently there is no evidence against him and he has an alibi for the time of the abduction all be it from his mother hence I suspect the reason he is only a suspect and has not been formally arrested as there is no evidence against him aside from the supposed unusually high level of interest in the case which can be indicative of a felon, as with Ian Huntley.
I suspect he fits a profile and thats it I hope they do not make the evidence fit the suspect and continue to view the evidence if there is any left with an open mind.
Equally the Portugese Police have displayed a complete inability to hold a competent investigation the crime scene was not even closed off so detailed forensics have been impossible I think the room may have even been allowed to be cleaned!
I have absolutely no confidence in the ability of the Portugese Police to succesfully investigate this. |

i aggre alan about the police. if they work the evidence around the man it still defeats the purpose as madeleine will still not be found. |

I don't think it benefits anyone to attribute blame to the parents in such away, yes they were wrong to leave them as they did but just think how many other kids will not be left on there own because of this.
Such incidents cause a far greater awareness in the populous and through their mistake other lives may be saved.
I would say this if the kid had fallen off a balcony then yes the parents are to blame but as the kid was abducted is it fair to blame the parents for the actions of another sentient being? I think not, the only blame is attributable to the abductor for entering the hotel room and taking the child. |

if they wernt left alone by the parents in the first place the abductor would not of got in to the the hotel room to abduct the child in the first place like isay who in there right mind leaves a 3 year old on there own . |

Her parents will have to live with the fact that they are as guilty as whoever took her.
What makes me cross is the fact that if she was a single parent, the press would have hounded her into the ground but, because she is a GP, they haven't.
What ever the outcome, there will only be one victim, Maddy.
There is no suitable punishment for the kidnapper, there is no way they could be made to feel as scared & frightened as Maddy

Tony - I apreciate you view (however narrow minded) BUT - Nobody deserves what has happenned to hapopen to them no matter what stupid mistakes/decisions they have made beforehand
I can only hope and continue to pray that she is found well and safe, the alternatives bring me to tears as a parent
My and my families thoughts are with her and her parents |

Tony dont you think that this still might of happend if the mum & dad was there as they went through the window they could of been sitting in another room and not herd a thing so you cant say you blame them.
But im with linda on this one if it was a single parent things might be diff. |

paul yes this could of happend if they were there but they could of heard the poor gilr scream or somthing . but they wernt the were out having a meal. and left the kids at the hotel. it makes you wonder if this is a regular thing back in the uk .going out and leaving the kids at home. as for some singel parents and social services that could be the next thread.
i like you also agree with linder and i take my hat of to telboy for is imput on this matter
