Black-banded sunfish: trouble eating |

Hi
I have a black banded sunfish that, until recently, has been doing really well - he's always been the perfect little hunter when feeding. But over the last few days he seems to be having trouble actually taking the food (frozen bloodworm, mosquito larvae, etc) into his mouth. As he approaches the worm he repeatedly misses it, almost as if he is having trouble with depth perception. There's no visible sign of damage to his eyes. Any ideas please? |

If his eyes are not cloudy, and his mouth is not damaged, the only thing I can think of is Vitamin A deficiency. What has he been eating?

He will only eat live foods or frozen worms. |

Which live foods? I think coloured crustaceans like Daphnia and Artemia probably contain more vitamin A than other live foods. Live Daphnia (from a good source) and Artemia are popular with most fish. |

Yep- daphnia and artemia, along with occassional glassworms. He won't touch frozen daphnia though, and isn't all that keen on frozen artemia - so the bloodworm is the one that goes in most often as I can't get the live stuff all the time. |

Live daphnia and artemia are better than frozen - the frozen ones break up and release lots of particles into the water, and it looks like the fish get mainly the shells.
How is the fish doing? Is he any better or worse? |

He's loads better thanks. Managed to get a lot of live food and by this morning he was back to normal. Thanks for your help. |
