at about 4pm this afternoon noticed heteractis anemone closing in on itself, also all little pesky glass anemones doing same thing. then realised main powerhead wasn't working, took it out and there was a smell of electrical burning. Now snails have all dropped off side of tank, and clown fish is lying on floor of tank. chromis seem to be breathing very fast but could be stressed cos we've been messing about with tank. other fish nowhere to be seen. Somebody help me!!!! |

Try doing a water change it could temporarily help. Have you fixed the power head? If not get one as soon as you can. |

i am not a marine expert, have you checked the water? if the main powerhead runs the undergravel then your undergravel GOOD bacteria has died and BAD bacteria has started to grow,do a water change add one of these bacteria culture liquids like water safe or safe water (assuming you can with marines)they remove nitrite and ammonia and help the GOOD bacteria regain a foothold any dead inverts should be removed quickly you may even have to remove the fish to a seperate tank if you have a dense aquascape ,dead stuff could be anywhere, good luck |

if the anamone dies it'll wipe the whole tank... if they look bad get them out and pu them into another tank

all water checks came back fine. Fish all died, anemone, crabs and snails all ok. Have come to conclusion water somehow lost all oxygen, cos snails all climbed to top of the tank, as did the bottom feeding fish (before they died). Are there any sort of kits available for measuring oxygen levels in water?
We took the back off the broken powerhead and there was melted plastic inside, so think it was something to do with that.
Anyway.Going to seek advice from friendly local shop tomorrow but can't really bear to look at the tank. think it will be a while before I restock. |

you can get test systems for oxygen levels but only a monitoring system would have helped you .it sounds more like some chemical got into the water that either damaged the fishes gills or depleted the oxygen by chemical process who would think a powerhead could do that?? |

the internal workings of the power head have melted and the electrical components and lubes etc, at most they where in contact with the water for 12 hours or so (last time i checked till I noticed it was not working)? |

Put some carbon in there to remove any remaining nasties.
Do you run a skimmer on the tank? If you do I do not think oxygen depletion was the problem however if you don't it is quite possible the oxygen had become depleted. |

yeah, in the first 24 hours after disaster, skimmer completely filled with gunk. Amazingly anemone has now fully recovered, as if nothing ever happened! Caused quite a debate in shop, nobody could agree on exactly what happened but all said definitely something to do with powerhead. Probably my own fault as I got it off some e-bay shop and apparently its a bit dodgy! You live and learn. Thanks everybody for your help, and I will try some carbon! |
