Bad tap water-floride? |

Having probs with fish recently, and can only put it down to the tap water recently. Now thinking im gonna have to use RO water.
Lost a ray and a flagtail. And a week ago I done a water change (50%) before I went to france fishing. Then had call a few hours later from the old dear saying that my 29" tyre track was on the floor a few metres from tank. Covered in fluff paper and wrapped in wire traces with treble hooks. Could have only escaped due to bad water.
Anyone else had problems. Im talking sensitive fish here such as rays, discus etc??? |

how did you come to have treble hooks near your aquarium?
only problem we have is fancy Orandsa with bad eye problems |

50% water change sounds too much, unless you had a problem Could be shock that made it jump out of the tank |

have to agree 50% at once with rays an the like is too much?do you use additives that remove chloramine? do you mix the water outside the tank for a few minutes then add it or do you add the water then measure in the additive? have you checked your tank water? have you checked your tap water? even goldfish will jump when faced with huge water changes if they are not used to it. i am sorry for your losses though |

"Could have only escaped due to bad water"
this is a bit presumptious isn't it? Could have ONLY escaped due to bad water. Yes thats a POSSIBILITY Jake but hardly the ONLY reason a fish would make a "break for the border", it happens, happen in "perfect" water too

50% once a week has always been fine. As they are used to tap water ive never really thought any different. The 2 fish I lost were new but didnt die after big WC.
40-50% was as it is heavily stocked but once moved over to a bigger tank this week will have to try 30-40% per week.
Will have to stuff filter with poly filter to take out nasties.
Yes I do use additives but with big tanks its hard to pre mix first then add. So always add very slowly through a hose with an extra heater over about 2 hours. |

you could be allowing chloramines into the system they will break down into chlorine and ammonia on contact with organic waste the chlorine could damage or retard your filter the ammonia will stress the fish until your additive is added two hours later
you can add water quickly with buckets for hot and a hose for cold then add the additives as long as you switch off your filters (no longer than 30 mins or so )while doing it give it 5 minutes after the additves have been added then switch them back on.i use a twenty gallon tub sit it at the side of the tank fill it with a hose and buckets add the additives first so it is well mixed using hot water to equalise temo then pump it up into the tank with a small pond pump easy. your losses could be stress or simple cross infection but rays can be sensitve to change of conditions if you treat them like wild caught discus you should be fine |

Thanks but im in sussex.
Most prob will just see what the water is like in my new house and use poly filter as that will take out any chemicals in the water. Plus wont do as big water changes, they were mainly due to having a mbu and peacock bass which I havent got now. Will have to sus it out soon as will have tigrinus cat which are very delicate and wont be cheap.
Really just wanted to know if anyone has had problems with their tap water??? |

tigrinus ahh lovely stuff ,what else you got in your tank? are they all suitable tankmates? do you have a supplier yet? where from and how big? black gravel may be a good starting point or coal dust.
there have been reports of problems with rays and tigs, and other territorial cats may not mix well.other than that should not prove to be a problem to keep, not good travelers but not that delicate generally |

Danny is tropical imports. And neil hardy is prob the biggest and best wholesaler of decent fish. All maidenhead shop use hardys. Will prob get any decent tig I can find, hopefully 6-12" for around £200-£250.
I know blacks are very rare in the wild, and think they will be banned soon. Therefore was gonna get asian, but skint now after buying my first house. Cities 2-is that an import ban? Still being imported from peru. |

sorry but i cocked up the spelling CITES -convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora.it appears that the black arowana is no longer on cites 2 the asian arowana is on cites 1 and if ya own one i believe you need a certificate,i have a plain old silver, my local shop had two blacks, not that he knew?? the problem is with how they get the young,it often involves simply catching a brooding adult and cutting his head off then pouring the young into containers egg sack still attached. they need to be farmed and some probably are now after the time spent on cites 2
tropical imports are retailers which is fine but how can you get fish from neil hardy aquatica cos they are wholesalers?? i cant find any wholesaler who will send me a price list never mind fish until i get my pet license through(if you havnt got a tig by then i will try to help) |

All asians are farmed, it doesnt involve killing the adults, just prizing their mouth open to relese the young. More and more silvers are farmed now. Wild caught silvers and blacks are mainly from the adults mouth which are then later killed for food.
2 of my friends have shops so can get anything cheap. Worked in the trade for 3 years when younger. Thank god I got out and started earning better money. |

thats good you have contacts it all helps when buying the expensive stuff? i know the farmed stuff isnt killed, that would be silly. i have only recently started keeping fish again after a twelve tear absence from the hobby(when i stopped maidenhead only had two or three outlets and were not that highly thought of )so in some regards i am a little out of the loop.
cites used to have loads of restrictions on a huge number of fish but a look at the website certainly shows a change. Scleropages formosus is listed in cites 1 which means trade is only permitted in exceptional circumstances so whoever sells them has to have permission, however there are always ways around this ,and placing it on cites 1 had one massive impact it made it ten times more valuable and therefor more desirable ,crazy eh trying to save it (15 years ago)just made it worse especially in the short term.i dont think you can buy them in the usa at all? correct me if i am wrong. and send me a pic of your tig when you get him |
