pricewise you cant beat fluval cheap for the product and does good filtering 10/10 for poorman"s filter |

No you really have to use your own experience.
Best filter for oscars - I recon a sump would be best, easy to maintain and abilty to use lots of differnt media.
But if I could not go for that, I would go for 2 good size externals for biological filteration - use siporax ideally, and an internal for mechanical/chemical filteration - as long as they are regularly maintained.
Personally Eheim would be my first choice. As they cope with pressure better than most filters and you can get spares for them and they are reliable. |

Eheims are my choice, I have 2 of them and 2 Fluval 403's. Find the Eheims a lot easier when I'm doing maintenance, hate the loose O rings on the Fluvals. |

i have 2 fluvals in one of my tanks and dont really rate them to be honest, in another tank i have a cheap filter( doesnt have a name on it) which cost me £13 brand new from the shop and easily copes with a 30gallon |

at the end of the day it comes down to what you can afford
i have a ehime 2213 and its over 10 years old and still going well( only had to replace the impeller once! good value as it came with media around £80 at the time
i have a Fluval 304 for 5 years and my only complaint is the tubing holds mulm/dirt in them! however from pets city at around £48 its with media and great economy filter!
i have a fluval 3+ and find its only the top 1 inch that ever gets dirty?? does anybody have this problem? it does do a good job in water movment and oxigenising |

yes popey, my fluval3+ do the same thing just the top inch or 2 seems to get clogged + yes i also use em for water circulation! great minds eh? |

I used an aquamax 700 pro with built in UV on my 5x2x2 oscar tank and it was priceless. its as big as the big eheim comes with all the media and doesnt clog . |

you cant beat eheim for quality, and you will find it tricky to beat fluval 405 or fx5 for value for money, but i just bought a canister filter for my mothers pond and i will be buying one when i need to replace my big tanks filters one turn of a knob and this thing cleans itself ,if it will keep a heavily stocked 1000 gallon koi pond clean it can handle a few oscars in 200 gallon tank, oh and it has a uv too?? £180 superb |

The best way of keeping an Oscar tank clean and the fish healthy, is to carry out big, regular water changes as well as decent filtration. It's like flushing your toilet! |

i emailed hagan about the fluval internal filters +3
i have a fluval 3+ filter and find that only the very top 1 inch ever gets dirty? im a member on a popular fish website and other members also experience the same. It would be intresting to hear from you regarding this. you may be intrested with the feed back at Aquarist Classifieds http://www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk/forum/viewtopic_58337.php kind regards robert
their reply today
Dear Robert,
Thank you for your e-mail.
I have had a look at your web site and found it very interesting. The reason only the top inch of your filter gets dirty is because that is where the water is drawn in by the impeller, so that is where the filter first starts to clean the water. If you left your filter longer the whole sponge would eventually become dirty as the debris soaks down to the bottom. If I can be of any further help please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Kind regards,
Kathryn
a little obvious dont you think? |

Eheim every time and if you are on a budget go for an eheim classic.
Very reliable filters never had a problem with them fluvals on the other hand have jammed for hours and then restarted doing in my marine tank leaked endlessly despite replacing the seal ring flooding my lounge never used the tetratec or rena ones but have heard they are good and reliable. |

i have 2 ehiem 2217 and use on a 5x2x2 heavy stocked malawi tank and they are great. You can just back wash them to save removing from tank also i wouldnt go any smaller than 2217 as had a 2215 and flow rate is poor in comparison, i paid 67 quid from charter house aquatics, hope this helps |
