I have three. Slow growing like you said and like high pH but I'm sure you know that. Had mine about a year now and do seem to have a pair but no breeding as yet. I read the dominent male goes darker in colour and one of mine has changed colour slightly. Sorry not much help. Hope you get on OK with yours.

If you want to get them to breed you have to provide somewhere for the female to hide in, its entrance has to be big enough for her to enter but not the male - he will stay outside and guard it and fertilise the eggs by 'wafting his stuff' through the entrance.

The males not only go darker but usually have much longer ventral fins.

We feed ours on a mixed diet of basic flake, spirulina flake, freshly hatched brine shrimp (they go crazy for them), frozen daphnia, frozen mysis shrimp, chopped prawns, chopped garden worms and red crumb from www.ta-aquaculture.co.uk
