Just FYI, the name is: Oscars, with an 'a'(Latin name: Astronotus Ocellatus). Quite easy to keep, but NOT community fish, except in with other fairly aggressive cichlids. I keep mine with South Americans cichlids, such as the Cuban (cich. tetracanthus) and Green terror (Aeqidens Rivulatus), as well as cich. Dovii, cich. Festae, Red Devils, Texas, etc. Your previously kept fish (ie guppys) will make good food for Oscars - sorry, no offence intended, as all these types of cichlasoma are piscivores (ie eat fish; live or dead) as well as being generally omnivores - meaning they'll eat just about anything! Check with your local Aquarium store for food and upkeep. They generally require a bit of room, no direct sunlight, around 22-25 degrees C and no aprticular tank decoration, apart from gravel, some rocks and perhpas some driftwood. |

you will proabably want to get a bigger tank pretty soon once they reach about 5''. they create a massive bioload and the sooner you can get them into large tank with driftwood and other typical new world cichlid decor, then you will be able to fully appreciate their intellegence and beauty |

Jagman, how did your oscars get on with the tets, dow, festae, rds and texas? I've found oscars try to be aggressive, but not seen one yet that would stand up to them, esp the dow, festa and rds? |
