Hi most of you will know that i made a post a few days ago and after speeking to you and other fish keepers i have decided to get the following equipment for my 81x31x41 cm tank:
Deltec Mce300 skimmer £130
5 kg of live rock £50
sand, rowaphos, salt etc £50
Powerhead £15
Iv managed to do it for a reasonable price by not getting the overtank luminare and just sticking to my plastic hood and sacrifising 5kg's of live rock.
Will one 18 watt white bulb be ok for the tank as im doing fish only?
Will 5kg's of live rock be ok? ill be able to add to it as i get more money. |

sorry, i meant there is only such much you can cut corners with keeping marine, i tried it once years ago, like what other people say on the forum, either do it properly and splash the cash or dont bother!!!!!! i think you, yourself Scotty have an appreciation for what can go wrong, its not just down to expertise but also (sadly) down to cold hard £££
thats not to say ebay cant be useful, it can sometimes

ebay in this country has generally become a dumping ground for other peoples useless old tatt, however good deals and bargains can be had with great care and attention, the keeping of marine fish is just as jim son says to do it well you need cash and lots of it |

Hi Scott, if you go onto ebay and look at EQJ Trading Ltd you can bag a bargain like I did, I paid £62 for a complete set of 4 t5 lights complete and brand new, They come form Germany but are delivered really quickly and are great. |

Thanks, but does anybody know if it will actually work with an 18watt light as i will have to get a whole new hood or overtank luminare. |

Scott your cheapest option would be to build your own hood use 2"x1" to make the frame and then use boards around the outside of the frame if you do this you will be able to make a hood to suit your needs. You will also be able to accomodate more lights incidentally how deep is the tank you may be able to get away with a bank of T8 tubes these are far cheaper and just as effective in a shallow tank. |

Sorry just seen the dimensions 4 T8 tubes would be sufficient I used 5 T8's for quite some time on a 2 foot deep tank!
Go for 2 marine white and 2 marine blue actinic
If you do this you will be able to keep some corals mushrooms and button polyps with relative ease.
As an alternative to 4 T8's you could go for 2 T5's one blue one white.
You have the advantage of a shallow tank so you will not need very powerful lighting.
You can get away with just 5 kilos of live rock to start with as long as you do not try and stock it with loads of fish and other organisms.
The skimmer is going to do a lot on this set up.
As far as how you go about arranging the live rock I would suggest you do 2 mounts one at each end of the tank giving an open water area in the middle.
Perhaps on one mount just have mushroom anemones and on the other just button polyps done correctly it would be a stunning set up.
Thinking about it as the hood is relatively small you wouldn't need to use 2x1, 1x1 timber would be more than sufficient. The hood will probably cost no more than £20 to make especially if you get the timber you need from a timber mechant instead of homebase or b&q. |
