I have 6 lovely discus in a 400 litre tank and all got on well, there was a pair that always were together untill recently.Ihave never in all the years that i have kept discus fed them beefheart untill recently ,then all hell broke loose, one of the pair seemed to go beserk and relentelly bullied all the others even his best mate,i have never seen him or her so aggressive before,he will not let them feed and if they as much as come out of the corner they hide in he bullies them right back there,.Can anyone please advice as it is upsetting,is it a coincidence with the beefheart ,should i put him /her in a seperate tank, any help would be gratefully appreciated,

Are the discus all the same size, because something could have triggered it to be the dominant fish and more than likely to be a female, It could be the beefheart , have you tried to put one piece at each end of the tank, You could have had a bit of a PH crash which has brought the fish into breeding condition and if no one else is ready then it could lead to bullying, If it is becoming more dominant then try moving the decor round, this can sometimes help, let me know how you get on. |

i am with elmo, fish cant digest beefheart properly this could have brought about an increased load on filters and a ph reduction, lower the temp by a couple of degrees for a few days that may calm them down |

Big cats states "fish cant digest beefheart properly" If this is the case, why does it produce such spectacular growth in fish? |

most discus breeders do use beefheart! but for me they wouldnt get it in the wild! but then saying that, nor would they get pellets flake etc, so if it works for you then hey ho, but does it not make a mess??? |

the protein level in beef heart is so high that even partially digested it produces fast growth, however it is either not fully digested or takes longer to digest (i have witnessed this in baby red tailed catfish)any high protein food carries a risk of fouling ,and fish food manufacturers dont spend millions of pounds on development for nothing? |

big cats is right wide use of beefheart can cause problems it is used to make the fish fatter and grow quicker but it does foul the water and soon goes off. There are new products out all the time including a new one from tony chan which you can get off ebay or off chens discus, in his report he says he has moved on to this food because its the best he has used, there are 3 different types for doing different jobs including putting weight on fish, Have a look at chens website , the man knows what he is on about, just look at the quality of his fish. |

thanks all for your advice ,done everything that was suggested, lowered temp, moved decorations around etc but to no avail. The bully just keeps on bullying and his/her recent buddy will not feed at all now,i guess i will have to put the bully in a tank on its own but waiting for parameters to settle first,Elmo could you please give me the name of the discus food you suggested above as definately no more beefheart for the time beeing .if ever as i also get fed up of collecting the left overs from the tank and having to do more water changes, thanks again all |

You have already decided to do what I would suggest, move the bully to another tank. This will give him time to think and give the other fish time to alter the pecking order. Give him a couple of weeks, change the tank around and then reintroduce and you should be fine. |

It is called tony tans vital power which is the one for putting weight on, but there are two others for different sized fish, look on ebay and put in discus on the search or visit chensdiscus.co.uk |
