I pressume you mean in a nitrate reductor filter such as those manufactured by aquamedic and deltec.

Vodka can be used as an alternative food source to maintain anaerobic bacteria in the filter I have heard it does work but using a denitrator is really treating the symptoms not the cause I would look at how you are running the marine tank and see if you have a nitrate factory somewhere in the set up.

Possibly you are using a canister filter or trickle filter instead of live rock. Whilst artificial filters are fine and in some cases necessary for some marine fish it is not ideal on a reef tank where the berlin method should be favoured which utilises live rock and very efficient protein skimming to remove nutrients before they breakdown into nitrate.

I agree with Alan, You need to find the cause.

But i know a few people who dose vodka into their tanks and it has worked wonders

Thanks for the feedback, we are useing a v2 400 skimmer a large sump tank, eheim filter and live rock but still out nitrates are high, we are pulling our hair out trying to sort this out. Plus we did a water change last week. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanx

I would suspect your eheim may be the problem - depending what media you have in it - if you have any biological media of sponges in there, they will be breaking down ammonia and nirite, but producing nitrate.

Also if you have sponges in your sump, the may well be also producing excess nitrates.

What is in the sump?

We have taken the sponges out of the filter and only have media in it plus some charcoal bags pls a sock of phosphate remover(changed at the weekend).
In the sump we have bio balls in one chamber then a sand bed with cal?? and then in the 3rd chamber is the pump and skimmer.
We have lots of live rock in the actual tank and I only feed sparingly am and pm. Our sump is 3ft by 2ft.

Bio balls will cause nitrates.

Maybe thats where there coming from?

Also what size is the tank and what stock is in there?
