Hello Terry, do you have an RO unit, or are you planning on getting one i use 60/40 RO/tap, but never stored it, make it and use it as soon as it's up to temp |

You can store RO for a couple of weeks if you have a powerhead or something to move the water around.
I would buy my own, It will be a lot cheaper. |

Just like to add Tel , that most LFS sell so called RO, if you were to test it it would be high in NO3 , PO4 , and a TDS reading well above 100, and some LFS even sell you RO when its plain old tap water. Cheaper to buy a small RO Man unit mate |

Im in the believing tel that its best stored in the dark.....keeps better due to less chance of algie forming due to light ? well thats what LFS told me when i asked similar question about ro. |

First off RO water is near pure water with a TDS of no more than 10 hopefully.
Secondly are you on a water meter if so it may actually be cheaper to buy from a LFS but I'm not certain on that you would have to do the calculations but it would be sensible to assume the LFS would be on a water meter and would be covering their costs when selling RO water. So it is likely that it would be cheaper even if you are on a water meter to get your own unit.
Thirdly storage wise if you store it in a food safe sealed container you could store it indefinately in light or dark.
Due to the low TDS and it being sealed you should get no algae as the algae spores would have nothing to feed on and wouldn't be able to get to the water anyway.
When using the water take what you need and mix with salt using a power head and I would suggest you do this for at least 12 hours before using the water this will make sure the oxygen levels in the water are good as well as making sure the mixed salt water is mixed and stabalised properly.
In many way it would be better to mix the RO with marine salt as soon as you get it and store it in a dark place in a sealed container all you would need to do to use it then would be to aerate the water for a couple of hours before use to up the oxygen content but you could only do this with synthetic salt mixes not dried salt as there maybe some bio load that may turn the water bad.
Mixed salt water is far less reactive than pure ro water so is harder to contaminate.
Hope this helps I've rambled on a bit. |
