hi kath,my last tank took a month for the levels to drop, and just because you have two filters it makes it no quicker they will both take about the same time to grow the bacteria needed to sustain the tank |

you guys got to be kidding me!!! have any of you ever tested your water except for Kathgoody? no one has mentioned that if her readings are correct her fish are DEAD they just dont know it yet!
Alan F states "i would not start to worry yet" so Alan if you had fish in a tank with Ammonia at 8 and Nitrites at 5 when would you start to worry??
I thought buying a tank with fish (espcecially Cory and Tetras) and THEN cycling it went out with the dark ages?
Sorry Kath but you have well and truly snookered yourself here, but we live and learn!

on a practical note
- if your pH is 7.0 thats a major reason why your fish are still alive, pH of over 7 means TOXIC ammonia
- stress zyme wont do any harm but isnt the substance of choice here, it wont work fast enough, but it might help set up filter bacteria for the future (although this in itself is debatable with these products)
- go for either AMMO LOCK or SEACHEM PRIME to make sure the ammonia is de-toxified. SEACHEM PRIME in higher doses also claims to de-toxify nitrite.
- the fact you have corys and tetra's means you cant really add salt which naturally de-toxifies Nitrite (well you could but its risky)
- Unless you have another MATURE tank and can place some filter media in your new tank, your only option is the above supplements i just mentioned and daily 25-30% water changes until levels reduce to MUCH lower (be sure to use correct doses of de-chlorinator)
- dont **** about with 10% water changes as some might advise, this will make **** all difference
- dont feed the fish for 3-4 days
- Make sure any excess food or waste int he tank is siphoned out
- Increase water agitation for extra o2 content and your fish's gills are slowly being burnt out due to ammonia poisoning and nitrite in the water means fish cant take in as much o2 as they need, hence Ammonia+Nitrite in the water usually = DEATH |
