hi. now im sure u will all now about the weather warnings around england and where i live we hav a severe weather warning. today ive had the day off school because it has flooded. surrounding villages have flooded and down the road there is a small river that has filled about 10 feet and covered a field, woods and peoples gardens. where we live is on a slight slope s all the water gos through us and there quite a flow going down towards our house. there is a chance the drains will filland burst so theres quite a chance of flooding and massive powercuts. we have a pond in the garden(raised and formal) aswell as the tanks. what can i do incase of powercuts Ie keeping the filter bacteria alive and aeration aswell as the heat in. what should i do about the pond fish? ill go down to the river and get some pics in a minuite to show you wahts happened. to be honest when i saw it i shat a brick in case it comes up to our house. anyway any ideas? anyone else had floods where you live etc cheers |

Hi blu, about all you can do is tip a bucket of water in the pond filter every 20 mins or so to keep the bacteria fed and alive. The fish in the pond should be fine, as the rain falls it creates air bubbles (oxygen). As for the tanks, a battery power back up pumps always handy to have. Will keep an eye on the thread for ideas for myself.....lol. We have lorries stuck under bridges in 2 ft of water in town.....immposible to get to some places. |

best to wrap the tanks in towels to retain the heat within your tropical tanks......goldfish in outside pond will need removing if your to keep them when/if the pond were to flood
good luck |

Never mind the weather-I just flooded my house, forgot to turn taps off before un doing them. 1 1/4" pipe, thats alot of water. Had to go and hire massive dehumidifier.
The river near is the fastest in the country and often floods, lived beside it for 22 years. Upstream every winter people lose the contents from their ponds so now alot of koi swimming around in the Arun.
Generaters cost nothing these days, check screw fit direct out. If not hire one from the many tool hire centres |

Wow bluboy thats some great photos, hope everything works out OK for you.
Here's a link to an article I found last year about what to do in power cuts, the guy knows what he's on about as he says at the end of the article he went for 11 continuous days without power or running water:

As far as the fish indoors go a generator is the way to go.
With the pond all you could do is put a strong mesh tight over the top of the pond and hope the fish remain contained if it floods the risk is you get a flood with raw sewage but providing the drains don't back up and the mesh stays in place you shouldn't lose any pond fish.
I wouldn't be to worried about filtration in the pond either as it will be getting the mother of water changes!
Hopefully though it will start to subside a bit now while there is a break in the weather I think the UK has had the worst of it now. |

I had to bail out some water from my goldfish tub in the garden to stop it overflowing, as the level was rising very fast. The water was running off the roof, carrying dust and moss into the fish water. I have managed to remove most of the dust. I certainly have to think of getting a cover for them! |

Didnt think it'll efect me but river burst banks and flooded my 5,000 gallon pond. Lost a fair few fish inc 1 channel cat, 2 small wels cats and 2 different types of sturgeon without mentionning the koi. Guess it'll make fishing more interesting this summer. Gutted |

Unless you have a license don't mention the wels or the channel cats again! |

Jake, I'm so sorry to hear of your lost fish. With the numbers of fish escaping during floods, we are going to have a lot more species in the UK! Some of them will certainly survive. |

mine are hear their and everywhere, i havent spotted any casualies as yet but im 100% certain there will be, there in my neighbours gardens two doors left and right and behind the house , absolutely nom chance in hell ill be able to find them all...quite s**t really because aswell as them being pets their also worth alot of money...and as im sure alot are aware of they dont grow incredibly quick, so its not as easy as start from scratch with some more young fish...arhhhh |

hey i am sorry for anyone who loses a pet, thats what they are to us, but i am gobsmacked that you did not ensure that the wels and channel couldnt escape wels cats will ,if they survive ,cause untold damage to local fish stocks,if anyone from the environmental protection agency catches sight of this thread some folk could be in trouble.A few years ago we had a flood ,a local trout farmer was prosecuted for not preventing the escape of his trout, this was before the new laws?????? I would be surprised if the webmaster has not got a duty of care to ensure anyone he knows of breaking the law be reported to the appropriate authorities, after all if someone on this thread admitted to killing someone then we would all expect action. We as fishkeepers are being squeesed and pushed about what we should keep and not keep and have a responsibility to our fish, each other and our environment.Again my thoughts are with those who have lost prized pets |
