Hello Everyone.
Im getting a 4 foot tank that is divided into 4 seperate sections to create 4x 1ft tanks in one - to breed some guppies.
Im after some cheap filters to keep the water clean - i have seen some air driven box filters on ebay a while ago for about £2.99.
Are they any good?
Can anyone recommend any cheap filters to run in a 1ft square tank. |

Huey hung sponge filters will do the trick for you, as discus breeders use them in cubes for breeding |

trouble with that is Noise, if you not bothered with noise then possibly, but you still got to pay for airpumps though?
I would go for x4 Fluval 1's, better still would be an external or x2 externals (one each side with spray bars depending on if you can fit spray bars in tank) but you looking at £70-100 to do this.

its livebearer fry so they should be okay if you go the fluval 1 route, spounge filters are normamly used for egg-born fry as they tend to get sucked into even the most weak of internals |

Are fluval 1's better than the filters i was talking about or is it just the noise.
I dont want it to be noisy as its in my computer room, but i want want to spend a fortune. |

i would go along with mark,
with air driven filters the interpet are identical to the huey and a little less in cost.or the green Algarde Biofoam 45's if your on a budget.
box filters are easy to make
all sponge filters/box filters take a month+ to mature so keep stock low to start

I use sponge filters in my angel tank, the tank is in my bedroom and I can't say it's noisey. The ones I use are the Algrade Biofoams so that's what I'd use if I were you. |

IS there a big diffrence in air pumps then - becuase i bought a 6 outlet one a while back from ebay - it was new but cheap.
Its very noisy! Whats a good make then?
I have seen the Fluval 1's for less than £8 each new. |

Tetra are probably the quitest - but are pricey. I would definately go air powered. Biofoam 45's are cheap from www.ta-aquaculture.co.uk |

Fluval 1 have very small surface area on the sponge.
Do the dividers lift out?? If so then your best bet would be...an undergravel with 4 up lifts from white overflow piping 21.5/22mm.
You'll need four T-pieces and four 90 degree bends, along with pipe cut to sizes. Drill 2 or 3mm holes every 2cm along the piping and connect up bends and joins.
Piping comes in 6 foot lengths from DIY stores, approx £10 or £12 for all your bits and pieces.
A much more efficient filter in the long run |

No the dividers are solid glass - basically its 4 seperate tanks in 1. |

Okay i think im going to go down the air sponge filter route becuase i have had a fluval before and didnt like it. Also i think that there is less to go wrong with a sponge filter.
So this leads me to the question
Which is best?
Huey Hung Sponge Filters
or
Algarde Biofoams
The advantage of the Huey Hung as far as i can see are that they dont need to be cliped onto the side with suckers - so maybe easier to keep the tank clean??
Has anyone had them?

I use both - I tend to Use biofoams for smaller tanks with livebearers and low waste level. and Huey Hung for bigger tanks or lots of fry or messier species like cichlids
Algarde:
Pro's:
a) easy to clean sponges - they come off easy with one hand and can be replaced easily - very quick to rinse out and change over.
b) Cheap
c) Easy to get
CONS:
a) Those suckers
b) Catching fish is a bit tricky as you have to remove and re fit the filter.
Huey:
Pros:
Big sponge/ more surface area
easy to just lift out while doing matainance/catching fish.
Cons:
Price
Replacement sponge availabilty
Some plecs find the sponge mighty tasty |
