Good luck and i hope he find's them... but they are very rare because they have been band from export, i personally haven't seen them anywere within the last 6 months, the last one i saw was a 4 year old, 3" female for sale at £150 ,which i guy i know was selling... the only thing i could recomend would be phone around some good shops like wharf aquatics etc. and put an add up in the classifieds saying your looking for them, and put posts on forums on them asking if anybody has or knows were they are and just keep checking on them...you could also try sending a question to PFK to see if they know anywere and you might strike lucky and get in touch with a breeder or something... good luck i hope he gets some but expect to pay alot. |

incredibly difficult to breed, hence the cost. there are breeding programs in the Uk but as far as im aware they are all released back in to the natural habitat rather than to make a profit.. the fish community is littered with keepers who think they can breed them and then sell for hundreds of pounds but they normall end up selling them on without any fry |

Danny Boy there's a quite a few people in the UK how are breeding zebra plecs, the ones that are bred are sold on to other people intending to breed them. Thier goal is to produce more so that they don't die out in the aquarium trade as importation has been banned. I've never heard of the plecs being released back to their natural habitat. |

they are bred and relaeased for sure, im not upto date on it, and not sure if they are bred in the uk, but their are certainly breeding programs which release them back into the wild...and most certainly more difficult than your average pleco to breed, but not impossible |

I meant from breeding in the UK to release, I've personally never heard of it. I'm sure there will be a breeding programe and then releasing the fish back to the wild, but I'd imagine it will be nearer their natural habitat. |

They are not particularly difficult to breed. But not easy - they are pretty much the same as other Hypancistrus types. Most people just do not have a pair or provide the conditions they need to breed in.
In fact your average pleco (common plec) would be a lot more difficult to reproduce in the uk because of the size of the fish and the need to construct tunnels in mudbanks.
I am not sure it sounds like your friend has researched it much either - For breeding, the easiest way to have success is a small breeding set up in the order of 18" - set up with caves and strong water flow using powerheads. And 8X2X 2 would be difficult to control.
I would suggest they start with a cheaper and more easily available species like the L270 first, they breed in a similar manner.
Part of the reason there are not many bred on a comercial basis is they have few young that grow reletivly slowly and each pair does require quite a lot of work.
Regarding source's I would post a wanted add on one of the plec forums and see what happens - but don’t waste your money unless you are sure you have a good chance with them.
Regarding interbreeding - I really would not be too worried about this - I have not heard of interbreeding being a problem with plec species, remember that there are several species of fish in the hobby that have come from a single pair and 20 or 30 years later, no interbreeding problems are known. At this stage only a generation or 2 from wild - you should be ok |
