Last Saturday I sold all my Brichardi, so that I would be allowed to set up a 2ft for breeding my Angel fish. Put them in there on the Saturday as I used mature sponge filters and a mix of fresh and matured water.
Now as I speak they are going up and down a large piece of slate spawning. They've been showing signs of spawning all week, but I didn't think it'd only take a week for them to actually lay eggs. I know they are fertile and can raise young, as they've bred before. Only this time I'm able to raise the young. Needless to say, I'm very pleased.

Thanks guys, it's a summer project for me, in a few months I should have some angels for sale.

The female is certainly doing a good job on looking after the eggs! She's fanning them and picking out any unfertilized eggs, but she seemed to think the male was going to do some harm to them and was law jocking with him and chasing him away. Needless to say I've put him in another tank. She seems quite happy alone tending the eggs.

Shame it's not totally worked out this time, but theres always next time. Still I've got plenty of fertile eggs, so hopefully I'll have some babies to report of in a few days.

nice one
my mate bought 2 blue acaras about 9 days ago
put them in a small tank on their own
we now have about 75 blue acaras
have got discus and angles laying eggs but they keep eating them as its only their 1st or 2nd time at doing it(they will get it right in the end)

This is mine pairs 2nd time alone, their 1st ever time they got it right until the fry were free swimming, the female got aggresive and then ate the fry.

Once they are free swimming I will probably remove the female, just incase.

She has an advantage when it comes to fanning the eggs; she's a veil tail so has longer fins.

Well done Rob!

Best to remove adults when they hatch to the 'wriggler' stage. A glass partition or similar will separate them ok

Last time I left them too it and they were fine until a few days into the fry being free swimming, then they started eating them. I think I'll leave the female to it until that stage; seems a shame to seperate her from them if she does a good job, plus it's intresting to watch.

Quick update: The egg's now have little tails, and are swaying side to side. One or two occasionally fall, but mother keeps picking them up and spitting them back onto the slate. Really amazing to watch. Hopefully tomorrow the will hatch out and be proper wrigglers, not just wriggling eggs.

Rob C its normal for the eggs to have little tails mate, thats them hatching

I know it is, just thought I'd let people know whats happening. Like I said they should hatch out completely and be proper wrigglers tomorrow, all things going to plan.

Don't regret selling the Brichardis, watching the mother is amazing. The amount of work she puts into fanning th eggs, picking up any that are falling, fanning them and guarding them if there's even the slightest movement outside the tank. Shame she would let dad join in, there's always next time though.

AS yet no ones showed much intrest in the thread but, the fry are free swimming now.
The female keeps spitting any babies that stray too far away from the slate back onto the slate. Hopefully later today or tomorrow they'll all be swimming in open water as a group. Female is still doing a great job.

Thanks guys.

Haven't updated for a few days, later on the Friday the female allowed the fry to swim properly, but kept them in a tight group. When it came to lights out she bundled all fry into one corner of the tank and most were placed on the magnetic scrapper.

The female was removed yesterday, as she was allowing the fry to swim more freely so there was no need for her to be there (I'm aware she technically didn't even have to be there after spawning, but it was good to watch and much easier than artificial raising). She didn't look to happy to be seperated from the fry the other day, but she looks fine now.

The fry are doing very well and currently being fed on liquifry, I can't even begin to imagine how many there are! When they're a bit bigger I'll get them onto brineshrimp and crushed flake.
