YOU MUST HAVE ORGANIC WASTE STILL BEING DIGESTED OR DECAYING? TRY USING A REMOVAL RESIN YOU CAN FIND IT ON EBAY USUALLY. YOUR TAP WATER MAY BE HIGH IN NITRATE? HAVE YOU CHECKED IT?

hey chris ease up on the water changes, you could be in an area with a high nitrate content in your tap water, your reading of 40 is pretty good coz i would imagine rays eat high protien food so that means you get high protien waste,my only concern would be can the discus live with nitrate

I have found the Seachem Purigen works well, but fiddly to recharge, you use bleach and I worry about rinsing it out.

40 is okay, not brilliant though.

As suggested above check your tap water, if you are usibg tap water for changes I would consider using an R/O or a nirogon.

With high waste producing fish that will uproot plants 40 ppm nitrate is fine, I change 300 litres every 2 days and my nitrate is still 60 ppm +, RO water is no good for large polluters because the pH swings rapidly and as anyone who has kept rays will know, the pH swings will kill them more than any other thing, as long as the ray is eating and happy, relax about the nitrate.

Sorry, I should have qualified my comments. R/O water must be remineralised brfore using. If it is then you should not have pH problems.

I agree it is not much of a worry, but if you can avoid putting nirates in then do.
