I've always kept coldwater fish but am considering getting a tropical tank. It would be around 180 litres. But I don't know what to go for - I like coldwater fish because they tend to have their own personalities. I'd be looking for something similar in any tropical fish (ie, not stuff like danios, tetras, etc that seem to be very pretty but one is the same as any other)so any ideas for what to go for? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks. |

I'd go for cichlids if you want personality, what's your water conditions? If it's hard and alkaline go for Malawi or Tankyikan cichlids. If it's soft and acidic go for South Americans. |

id agree exactly with rob, i think malawis and tanganyikans are better though if your water conditions are correct for them |

I live in South London so I think my water is hard. Must admit, I know nothing about cichlids so looks like some research is on the cards. Thanks for your suggestions. |

Test your water first just to check.
Malawis are nice and very colourful, but if you go for Mbuna, you'll have to have lot's of them as aggresion is a problem. Also try to make sure you aren't buying hybrids when it comes to get them.
I haven't got a vast knowledge on them I must admit, so if you have any questions I doubt I'll be able to answer. Just do plenty of research and you should be fine. |
