hi guys, woke this morning to find my thread finned acara looking like it's struggling to breathe. didn't eat anything and seems to want to be out of the way. checked all parameters all ok. the only thing i've done different was clean the filter out yesterday and do a water change. everyone else in tank ok. outwardly there's nothing wrong with him. please help i'd be heart broken if i loose this beautiful fish. |

What parameters have you checked?
Is it possible that there has been a drastic change in the pH before and after the water change. They are a fairly sensitive species - so may well be affected by readings that others would not find a problem.
I am really not sure what to suggest - but it would be an idea to turn the lights off and cover the tank as this should reduce stress. |

I also have clown loaches in the tank and always watch them closely as i know they are good at indicating if anything is wrong. they're ok too. checked ph ammonia and nitrates all about 0 ph 6.5 |

What did you use to wash the filter? If it wasn't tank water the bacteria will have been killed off.
Did you use dechlorinator? |

I would check your Nitrites then -They could rise very quickly after a clean and a water change.
Also I would get a second opinion with your Nitrate reading - a reading of Zero is very rare. I would expect it to be somewhere in the region of 20-40 or evaen higher.
Also do you know what the pH was before the water change? I.e has their been a change in the level? |

the ph was 6.5 before the change. I used tank water to wash the filters and my nitrate level read 0.1 it is a 5' tank and i know it's no where near fully stocked. but to give you an update, he doesn't seem as bad today. I also think he may have had a confrontation with my geophagus altamira because if he goes anywhere near him he darts off. they usually get on fine but have noticed a couple of flare ups lately. |

Glad he is doing better, I hope it was only temporary, but definatelly test your Nitrites is is the most important test you could do. |

sounds like he has been attacked. i would think a 5' tank would be stable enough for it not to be a PH fluctuation.
what other fish do you have in the tank? |
