hi i am thinking of changeing my set up from a planted aquarium,to one for african chicklids, i need to know the cost of changeing over, as the lights are t5, i dont know if that is practical, and if they are east to keep have kept discus for a number of years, but i think rifts, will be a different kettle of fish excuse the pun, any help would be gratefully accepted thanks

what's your local water like out of the tap?(ph)
You preferably want to be looking at PH 8.0 or higher especially for Tangs, you can buffer this with the use of Coral sand and /or Tuffa Rock
They are easy to keep and breed, especially Mbuna(rock dwellers) but these are also the most agressive of the Rift valley species
Haps are another thing all together.much more "laid back" as agression goes, whatever you decide don't mix the two as the Haps will be seriously stressed and ultimately die from the effects

ive changed one of my tanks over recently to a malawi/ tang at the minute but ill soon have species from one lake only in all my tanks, as for setting up i found it pretty inexpensive, i traded all my fish in and got a good price for them, and the money which i got helped me buy all my rocks and coral sand, from there it was just the fish i needed to buy

Pretty much the cost involved are:

1) Changing substrate - thia may not even be nessesary if you like what you have - Coral sand is popular but has two problems, it is very white and reflective so the fish colours are often a bit washed out when this is used, also it is abrasive and may cause small cuts etc that can become infected.

2) Rocks - if you go for mbuna - you will need lots of rocks - tufa is used, but again is quite rough - it is ok for malawis but many tanganikans need a smooth serface to lay their eggs on - so slate is better.

3) Filteration - if you go into keeping Mbuna your stocking level will be high, so ensure you have plenty of filteration - if you are able to I would suggest going for two externals.

4) Lights are up to you - T5's are fine, you might want o change thee colours of the tubes in the future.
