Woke up to find my Oscars have laid eggs I thought they were both blokes, this is going to get complicated so I was wondering what I should do. I can not let them breed because the tank has a few Uarus and a Plec in too and no other tanks to put them in. I should really re-home one but was wondering about how it would effect its mate. Can someone please advice me what to do for the best.

They may well be both females, but even so they will still wish to defend a territory, so you are probably best to remove them both. but if tank size is no problem - let them spawn and see if any fry are produced.

Tank buster - males cannot lay eggs, yours must have been females!

Also yes - true pairs are quite rare - and worth working with if you have room.

I have been told about many breeding pairs in the past, but have yet to see locally bred baby oscars for sale in any shops (in over 15 years).

Their from the same brood so I dont think it would be wise to let them breed anyway, would it not weeken the blood line. Creating inferior offspring.

as paddy said id be impressed if they converted to fry. i tried for two years to brred from 8 oscars. i had eggs quite a few times but they never made it to wrigglers.

dont be suprised if you have two females either. but if they are a pair you cant prove this until you see fry. it is said that two females will often pair up.

and id be very suprised if you could tell they were two males or not. unless you vented them

letting oscars from the same shop batch breed is not a problem, even if they are brother and sister, which is possible but not guarenteed. oscars have been inter bred for decades,if you have space getting them to breed isnt that difficult?mostly you just get two females laying for one another cos the male was the one you took back to the shop because it was getting harassed???????

hi thomas. I have 2 baby oscars that I hope is a male and a female and I would be delighted if they breed. I named them harry and sally. harry is a nice tiger oscar and sally is an albino one. I also have 2 other tank mates for them a cat fish and a plec. hope you get firtile eggs and you can rare them on and sell them. My oscars interact good together and we have to see if they are male and female. cheers Short
