Race against time (and NH family) |

I have been planning to tear down my aquarium to get rid of pesky little snails and to change over to sand from gravel. Somewhere down the line I made a huge mistake. Basically I save all the aquarium water with fish and cleaned out the aquarium (Filter too). Put everything back and really did not expect much of a problem with Ammonia or Nitrite but it is!!!
Every day I dose Zymes to help the aquarium back to normal but readings indicate otherwise... Fish seem to be perfectly fine though... No signs that are described for ammonia poisoning at all! No red gills, no gasping for air, lively and behave as usual.
I have 2 Ammonia tests: one by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Inc (yellow pack with one bottle for 75 tests) and one from Hagen Master Kit (3 bottles to do a test).
First one reads ammonia near 2.0, second one closer to 0.5 I did a test on clean water and both show NIL. There is no best before date on any of these tests and I don't know which one to trust!!!
Secondly are the Zymes... 3 different kinds 2 liquid and 1 powdered... A generous doze every day for a week now and all readings are staying the same...
Thirdly is the Nitra Zorb... Put on e in 2 days ago (the right size) and not a flick of change in readings!!! Recharged it yesterday and put it again, 12 hours on - no difference in readings...
What the FCUK am I missing? |

How did you clean filter?
And why didnt you just add clown loach to eat snails? |

The filter was potassium permanganated then cleaned in a neutralizing solution (it is dead...)
The 2 Clown Loachers I have must be members of Vegan Society. They would not even try to nibble any of the snails!!! My loachers are 4 inch long and are supposedly quite capable of eating those... |

You need to get more clowns they are better in odd numbers so if i was you i would get another 3 clowns.
The 2 that you have prob cant keep up if you have got that many snails. |

So you have killed all the biological bacteria in your filter and are wondering why your readings are high? just cut food down and wait a few weeks to mature again.
Add a load more clown loach, Ive got 11 to 7". |

I've NEVER seen them eat any snails. And 5 clown loachers?! I never had any intention to keep big fish in my 200l aquarium. What will I do with them when they grow up? Anyway, that is beside the issue now. There are no snails apart from trumpets (which I like to keep). |

I'm not really wondering about the readings level but about the discrepancy in readings between 2 different test kits.
I also don't quite understand if all the supplemental Zymes I use are just bottled water, since I don't see any changes even after high dosage. |

whilst we are on the subject of ammonia, i know the different readings must be puzzling but in reality whether its 0.5 or 2.0 thats a big problem, basically i only consider ammonia readings as either NEGATIVE (basically not detected) or POSITIVE, the same for nitrite. The only reading i want to get specific on is NitrAte
Well the Zymes or whatever that is, take it thats some kind of filter-aid, the use of such supplements is debateable and they certainly wont do squat in a crisis.
Jake's point sums it up perfectly, you've completely mullered your filter.
Dont get me started on "filter bacteria" you might as well sit next to the tank and pray for ammonia to go down.... |

whats your pH? If it's below 7.0 that might be why your fish havent karked it yet |

why did you use pertasium permsnginate its one of the worst thing to use yes it kills every thing but did you use cristals if so did you remove it all, get some on your skin and see how long it takes to remove |

First i would not add any more clown loaces untill your filter has re seeded with bacteria and is fully cycled
Clowns are sensative
you could possably contact your local Aquatic store and blagg some seeded filter media yo kick boost your filter
good luck
