Picking my new tank up tonite and up til now ive only used plain gravel as a bottom, but id like to try some sand of some shape or form, now ive read that general kids play sand is as good as anything else... Would you members agree.. Im going to be keeping cichlids... |

Ive heard my times over play sand is fine.
The price at the fish shop is crazy.
I personally found Argos the cheapest (it was for my daughter not my fish tank).
I tryed it once in one of my tanks and found it too hard to keep clean. At least with gravel when you suck the dirt up the gravel stays behind.
I think though if your having a cichilds tanks sand is a must. It looks the part. |

I have no problems cleaning my tanks the syphon works ok you loose a bit of sand but not much.
Only thing you cant do with it is use an under gravel filter with it.
And if you have a good filter you dont have to syphon that much. |

if your keeping african cichlids, then go for coral sand as it buffers your ph and is more natural for your fish, if its C.A cichlids your keeping then go for the argos play sand |

We use a mix of coral & play sand in all of our 12 tanks - play sand from Argos is the cheapest & best for your money.
For your tank size I recommend only making it 1-2 inches deep as if any deeper there will be more chance of it compacting down and this, if left, will form deadly anerobic bacteria pockets.
To help with sand movement either move your fingers through it fortnightly (or use a kids plastic toy rake) or get yourself some sifting cichlids or Trumpet snails.
If your having SA cichlids get some Satonoperca Jurapari or Geophagus of some kind, if your having an African cichlid setup with bigger fish then for Malawis you could try Fossochromis Rostratus and for Tangys the Callochromis Macrops are brilliant - all these fish love nothing better than to sift through the sand which keeps it turned over and fairly anerobic free.
One last thing is put the base of any rock formation in place before adding the sand 'cause if you put the sand in 1st any caught under the rocks will go bad and could also make the rock pile unstable. |

That's OK kenty - I did forget to mention, make sure you give the sand a good wash before you put it in your tank |
