Does anyone actually make their own discus food? If so - what ingredients/methods do you use? I know that most people probably buy it - where is the best place to buy it mail order, for quality and value for money? Or collection in the north west (That's Wigan and Bolton - not travellin' any further!!) I have my first 2 discus coming at the weekend, and at the moment only have the granules to feed them. Thanks all. |

Sorry by food - I meant discus burgers or your own beefheart mix. Or does anyone know a better food that can achieve good growth results? |

I made my own beef heart mix.

This is the recepie i used
Recipe for Beefheart Mix
1/ 1 whole beefheart, stripped of all fat and veins.
2/ 1 small strip of lambs liver.
3/ 1 small can of garden peas.
4/ 6 strips of whiting fillet.
5/ 1 whole crab - meat only.
6/ 1 handful of Tetramin flake food - or whatever flake you normally use.
7/ 4 chicken breasts - fat removed.
8/ 1 yolk from a chicken egg - used to bind the ingredients.
9/ 2 tablespoons of spirulina powder.
10/ 2 crushed multi-vitamin tablets.
Basically, all you do is blend the ingredients together in equal amounts, and lay in trays for freezing. After 1 hr in the freezer, remove the trays and dice up into small cubes. When fully frozen, remove and tap with a small hammer - the blocks will shatter into small cubes. These can be stored in the freezer and individual cubes can be thawed fully as required, and fed to the fish.

.Mwilde forgot to mention that the smell that you will create in the kitchen when messing around with beef hearts is grounds for divorce in most of U.K. By far the simplest method is to order it from me and have it delivered frozen the very next day. See my advert here:

The other thing is about making it, it cost me about £20 for the ingredients - and then you have to have loads of space in your freezer to store it |

if you are looking at your first two discus then just feed them a good quality manufactured food that a top quality company has spent hundreds of thousands of pounds developing or you can feed spend a fortune and hours making up the recipe above and feed them with the meat from warm blooded animals that they cant digest properly anyway??? |

was going to post something similar, really not sure in the logic of using chicken breast with feeding discus?
sounds like "ready, steady cook" |

Thanks all - think the chicken breast is probably for the protein value thanks for the offer, it's very kind, just a bit too far away to travel for me. Eddy, am gonna have a look now - think I will buy it rather than risk a divorce....cheers again all. |

Is the only purpose of this food for protein/growth of the fish? Is there some alternative that's readily available from my LFS thats not quite so messy on the tank water, but will also grow the fish well??? |

I have to blow my own trumpet - do you see a line of people queueing to blow it for me?
The 1kg turkey heart are on offer at present at £6.00 each and the Discus Food Excellent (500g) are £4.50 each - this contains garlic as well as other minerals but both products still based on turkey heart. Minimum order is 5kgs of any or a mix of products and P+P to be finalised with order. Normal payment method is PayPal but a cheque or PO would suffice.

OK - but don't forget you can order your discus food in 100g blister packs - there are 25 packs to a box and you can mix'n'match your packs to fill up a box of 25 so you can have plenty of variety and with a shelf life of 12 to 18 months remaining it will last you well.
£29.50 gets you one pack of 25 x 100 grams delivered to your home address on the day of your choice (Tue to Fri). Have a look at my advert - it's the top one under Retailers & Services section to see the wide variety you can choose from - if you want sera or tetra granules included with your order the it is only £6 extra for 300 grams with no increase in postage costs....... |
