My son is thinking about setting up a tank for a couple of red bellied piranah anyone had any dealings with them as in are they hard to keep?

Im thinking they'd probably need an external filter to keep the water really clean, found some one who can get hold of some, but will also look out for anyone selling them because they want to change the type of fish theyre keeping, saw some set up in a tank at cardiff aquatic centre when I was on holiday last week they looked brilliant:)

from what i have researched they can be timmid ! are better kept in large shoals to reduce risk of bullying on a single fish.

as they get big they are hard to rehome and there is always some listed on the for sale addverts

i think the idea of keeping them is more atractive than actualy keeping sutch a fish !
im sure there are better preditor fish for your son to keep! still each to their own ......the above is only my opinion

I agree with Rob, much more interesting fish out there to keep, although not with the same street cred in their name

ive kept them and they are quite frankly the most boring fish ive ever kept...wouldnt recommend them in the slightest, the novelty will soon wear off

i did write an essay to start with but the computer broke and it annoyed me and now i cant be bothered do do a full write up they are extremely timid fish and they arnt like they are in the films anyway....it would be interesting to hear from anyone else who has kept them but im quite certain they will feel the same way as i do, try and persuade him against them , theres alot of better fish on the market, ask him why is it exactly why he wants pirahnas above everything else? i can guess, but we can go from there..

I agree with Woz, heard a lot of the same. And as mentioned above, wonder why there are always so many advertised for sale

He just wanted a biggish tropical fish that was nice to look at that he could keep as a small shole, & was relatively easy to keep, he just liked the way the tank was set up in the display he saw & how good the fish looked,

S shoal of Denison barbs (red line torpedo) look far more stuning
And they will never take your fingers off, do not need as many water changes due to not being messy eaters etc

They are a timid fish. I had 2 large ones once, but hardly ever saw them. They hid all the time. Had to bring them home from the lfs in polystyrene boxes, cos they bit holes in the bags and all the water came out. Woz is right the novelty will wear off!!!!

mine were so shy they shat theirselves if i put my hand in the tank, never mind attack me! btw i am not going to be responsible for anyone who does have their fingers bit off thinking its ok!

a mate of mine also kept them and felt exactly like me after a few months and got rid of them, id have got rid of mine in time if a certain someone hadnt knocked a bottle of aftershave into the tank, poor things

Bit holes in the bag???

Never had an issue with them, some pic's on my intro page. A shoal of congo's are great, especially when they grow, racing across the tank length displaying

While not especially difficult they are very messy, do need to be kept in shoals - when young some may be eaten and most will get some scars on them. You could make a nice fake pirahna tank with some Red hook metynis - They grow a good size and have that nice deep body but are vegetarians and easier and less dangerous to work with.

will look into the fish you've suggested & get some pics to show him that is pretty much what I thought about piranahs that they'd be messy fish, didnt realise they were timid tho

some very uneducated responses on here.
i presume the only piranhas you all have kept is the very common tank bred red bellies.

There are over 20 species of piranha and unless you have experience with any of them you cant really say "there boring"
"there timid" etc...

have any of you ever seen a 15" black piranha
or ever owned an irritans
or even a caribe or piraya,
im guessing no!!

there is no way on this earth you would be saying there boring and timid if you'd seen one of these wild caught fish in action.

i keep a diamond rhombeus (a variety of black piranha) and he's bold as brass...chases your hand and is very aggressive at feeding time.

here's a quick vid of him eating.

you can tell when im about to put the food in as he rises up to the top ready for the food

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuQEFKYjPUI

the key to getting piranhas to accept you being around and not be scared of you is to spend alot of time around the tank and interact with the fish.
i haven't come across a piranha yet that you cat teach to chase your hand or even come to the top of the tank to accept food

heres some of the different species to look at
http://piranha-man.co.uk/species.html

there's more to piranhas than tank bred red bellies that are scared of there own shadow

That sounds more like the piranah we saw at the aquatic centre, that new set up will have to wait though have to dismantle my 4ft tank & move it shortly (not looking forward to that)having laminate flooring put down so it has to be moved till it's done then put back, its the putting back bit that botheres me lol Im bound to do something wrong!

OOOOOOOOh, check out you out mr educated P-Muk!

Nice fan winning start to your comment, whilst you do come across as 'educated', I'm not to sure that a diamond rhombeus as you describe, would be an ideal 'pet' for a kid (assuming that Onyxx's son is actually a kid.

Interesting infor once you ot past the attitude in your post though, learned a lot from it - I now feel 'Educated'

Best of luck with moving your tank Onyxx, just had to do the same thing with mine, Has laminate down and had a flood (an uneducated mistake ) and am replacing the flooring with a nice carpet. Got a temp tank running in my garage with the 2 externals, final phase this Sunday

Sorry Alan78, didn't mean to tread on your toes there, know that's your area of expertise. Do you think its a great pet for a kid?
06-09-2007
16:21 by P-MUK
why is not a good pet for a kid?

does that mean a red belly is ok?

all piranhas have teeth so whats the difference?

just giving a few more options.

And where did I say a red belly is ok?

I am just of the thought that younger people tend to think Piranah's are a cool factor to why they want them (like a snake is a cool pet to talk about), but they soon lose the attention once they realise that they are not behaving like the ones on the discovery channel.

Your Diamond looks great
