I'm going with what Telboy said.
Or it may be them trying to breed as it is the right time of year. |

being a new koi, im assuming its not breeding size anyway...get rid of everything else and have a koi pond like me |

It depends Woz, you can buy large koi.
I'd agree with Woz about having a Koi pond though, if you only keep koi there is a lot less hasle. Plus you can get specific foods and treatment etc just for their care.
But, unless you want to spend lots of money it may not be the best idea.
Woz get some pics of your pond up on a new thread. And give some details about it- size, fish, filtration etc. |

Hi all,
thanx for all your replies have taken it all on board and have found the chibunkins and comet a new home with a neighbours pond the new koi was a couple of inches bigger by the way tel. size of pond is probably small fry (pardon the pun) to some you lot may have it's 9'x4'x4'deep |

its a nice size for Koi Kim as they need the extra depth in a pond! its temperature being deep will be more stable than a shallow pond.
how many fish did you add? as with most ponds dont over stock and you should not get problems.
Koi are messy fish and if your pond filter pump does'nt handle solid's then it might be something to think about upgrading in the future
Oh yeh and welcome Kim

Robert, I'm afraid you're wrong there, that's not really a nice size for a koi pond. It's a bit on the small side.
Most koi magazines and books recommend larger. |

this might sound thick and i know koi have different names but how do you know whatname a red over white or white over red is for example |

Kohaku.
Most koi books and magazines can help, there's also plenty of sites on the internet.
Regarding your PM I'm not sure. A forum or site specialising in ponds may be of more help. |

Rob-c as the size of the fish have not been stated then i dont see a ploblem with the pond for Koi! i accept that koi will grow very big ! however you can get smaller koi and enjoy them growing on from as little as 3 inches in size!
i made a pond the size of kim's for my father, he has 3 koi that has grown to around 7 or 8 inches and a few goldfish ! he has a powerful filter handling all the solids fine.
his pond will be fine for a good few years before they out grow his pond and at that time he will sell-exchange for small replacment fish.
why should we jump on people and just say your ponds not big enough ??? ok rant over lol |

7 or 8 inches isn't very big for a koi they can reach upto 3ft plus! My dad has had some only a few years they are already pushing 2 foot easy. It doesn't take long for them to grow.
As with all fish I always look to be able to house them long term as it's much less stressful for the fish. Each to there own though.
I'll try and get some photos of my Dads pond, he does it the 'proper' way, ie with massive filtration and a huge pond. But, I know many prefer a smaller pond with less filtration, but it's not really suitable for koi. |

Oh very nice, I don't think my Dad's could get much bigger, it's thousands of gallons already |
29-08-2007 15:07 by Woz
|
well mines about 2000ish i think, so not massive in koi terms, theres room for expansion next spring |
29-08-2007 22:57 by -Rob C-

Asked my Dad how many gallons, and it's roughly 5000 including filtration. |
