I have some very expensive guppies i have jut imported.
I have just come home to find one of the females dead, and another almost dead.
They seem to have a white tuffty bit on the site, as if they have been bit. On looking close it appear to be as if its bleeding.
The fish that was dead smelt really bad, i very lightly squeesedit and it was full of yellow puss.

Where abouts have you imported them from?
Imported guppies from the Far East are well known to drop dead easy. |

Taiwan
I think its a fungal infection - is it work me going to Pet at home now and getting
Interpet Aquarium Anti Fungus and Finrot |

bacterial infection for sure by the looks of it. In my experience female guppies a lot more brone to bacterial infections than males. I would choose interpet Internal Bacteria myself or possibly Waterlife's Myxazin, failing that you could consider ESHA, or a combination of Pimafix and Melafix |

05-09-2007 18:26 by mwilde
|
Even one of the males has a cotton wool like growth on the end of its fin. |

|
is it just the females that are going down hill? if so maybe they were gravid + the stress of importation has caused the young to die + rot inside female |
05-09-2007 18:28 by alan78
|
okay so there could be some fungus going on
i still say a bacterial med, PLUS salt in the water increased gradually, thats the advantage of guppies, salt, and thats should take care of the fungus and let the med sort the bacteria |

|
It's probably because they're so in inbred and used to near sterile conditions that they are weak and easily die. Its the same with most fish from the Far East. |
05-09-2007 18:32 by mwilde
|
No - the male has got cotton wool like growth on the fin.
Salt - table salt? How much? |
05-09-2007 18:33 by mwilde
|
So i souldnt have bought from the far east?
I paid over £100. |

table salts not ideal but imo and others it can be used short term if thats all you got, i normally heat salt in a pan on the stove and it dissolves quicker, needs a lot of stirring unless its good quality marine salt, then let water cool, as for doses, do some googling, also read this

hi matthew definately fin rot and fungus, are these the same as you have been selling on ebay if they are maybe you need to mail the buyers that they need to treat there tanks |

Sorry to hear your bad luck MWilde, especially with how much you paid for them as well. It is a common problem, I tend to get mine from UK breeders, got to know a few on Ebay (not ideal area for dedicated hobbiests and shipping live fish I know) and also from Livebearer web sites as well. Some of the good sellers with some good info include (search ebay using item number as an example
270160847478
Any or any fish from aquaman0_6 seller, Tim and Dave a A1
The treatments that Alan78 mentioned (apart from the salt) have worked for me, but it did take quite a while to clear. Good luck mate, let us know how you got on (and how many of the fish you actually got for £100)

Have to agree with rob c on this guppies used to be tough as old boots but they now breed them in chemical baths which weakens the strain ,better off buying from uk breeders. |
05-09-2007 21:21 by mwilde
|
Well i can honeslty say i have learnt my lesson now. |
05-09-2007 22:59 by Woz
|
got to say, the guppies are really nice but i couldnt justify that amount of money on them unless it was a very serious breeding program like im sure uve got/had, sorry to hear anout your loss |

I would have to agree with other people, buy from local breeders. It's easy enough to get good strains, there's quite a few UK guppy forums, where you should be able to get intouch with breeders and there fish should be much hardier. Also they'll be less stressed as they won't be transported for as long. |
06-09-2007 13:08 by telboy
|
be cheaper too! £150 for 8 guppies? im gobsmacked |
06-09-2007 13:21 by mwilde
|
Thanks.
I have bought from local show winning breeders in the past - however these were not avialble in the UK. I wanted them so i bought them.
How do you all think new stains come into the hobby, if you dont import them? |
06-09-2007 13:23 by mwilde
|
£150 for a rare stain, being imported into the UK, is not that expensive. A good pair of guppies from a top UK breeder are £20.
I bought 4 pairs for my £150. |

I have been to the fish shop today. I have bought some Pimafix and Melafix.I also got some salt.
Im planning on adding the Pimaix and Melafix to the tank, and maybe putting the guppies in a salt bath. I dont want to add the salt to the tank as i have a couple of baby corydoras in the tank to clean the bottom. I need to treat the corydoras now incease they have caught anything. Corydoras will not tolerate salt. |
