Here's one for the b/nose experts....what's the trick in ensuring a high survival rate. My b/nose breed regularly in an established tank but invariably only a few survive. Feeding on fine granules, cucumber, spirulina flake, cyclops, plenty of bogwood available. Any tips appreciated.

What you are feeding them is fine, the only way of getting more to survive is putting them in another tank or you can even use one of the live bearers net traps as these are really good and you will see them feeding all the time,

Thanks Elmo, it's strange how they just seem to keel over even at 3 cms and more.

NickG they like a tight hidy-hole to spawn in,eg, caves, small upturned plant pot, gnarled bogwood, I've even seen them spawn in aquarium ornaments. You can also buy specialised slate spawning caves - as seen advertised on this site - and they do work. Once you get a a pair going you won't be able to stop them!

Think I will save a tank in my garage for a pair. If anyone has a breeding pair they would bev willing to sell, please pm me

It did take me 2 years to breed kribs, so either I am alow starter, or like Rob says, I just try too hard.

Sorry just seen this as just back from hols. I have bred bristlenoses for a number of years. At the moment in 24" tanks in pairs with plenty of bogwood. The breeding sites are clay flowerpot bases with a notch cut out of the side ( cost about £1). A 50% water change with cold water will usualy trigger them off. Lastly dont be to clean with the water as I think the youngsters find food in the mulm and from about 100 eggs hatching I usualy raise the lot. Got 4 prs at moment and hundreds of youngsters.

thanks for all the replies. Do b/n's like a lot of current in their tanks? I'm just wondering if the fry need a high oxygen level to survive. What's the best temperature for raising them?

Hi. My adults only have sponge filters but youngsters will happily hang on in a strong current. However this is not necessary to rear them. If you think about it a sucker mouth is for hanging on in strong currents. As for temp I find they dont mind as long as its not extreem. At the moment mine are breeding at 23c. Good luck

i cant stop mine breeding, as soon as i see the fry i use a plastic pipe and suck them into a bucket through a breeding net then keep them in the net in the tank feed them on baby food and ground algae tabs until they are about inch and a half 2" them sell em to local shops for a quid each, usually get about 60 / 70 survive.
