Giant Siamese Fighter Bettas |

Just thought I would let you guys know about my gaint bettas and how they are getting on.
Giant bettas are not a different species, but a selection of larger siamese fighters. They were spotted in a breeders facility in Thailand and been selectivley bred since then.
The colours do not yet match standard size bettas, but the size is amzing - more than twice the size. Stunning fish. Even the babies are bigger (even at egg size) so are easier to raise. I haver found them a bit more difficult to get breeding.
The ones I have are a mix of Plakats (shorter finnage types) and half moon normal finnage types. |

Here is my latest aquisition - came direct from Thailnad in a box, by royal mail. This is a yellow plakat. I got a pair. They are large chunky fish with a good strong colour. I am trying to breed him with a long finned half moon giant female with cambodian mixed colours - as long finnage is a dominant gene over the short tail plakat finnage the offspring should be long finned giants. Hoping that the brood will be successful. Here is a pic of him - handsome brute:

Here are some other giant bettas (siamese fighters) I have:

The one above is a BIG male. He is a bit lazy about spawning though - cant seem to get him going. I am trying breeding him right now with the female sibling of the yellow male above. |

Here is another long finned half moon giant male. A good strong solid red. Another big fish.

All my fish came over by EMS and Royal Mail from Thailand. No problems. |

|
Here is another beautiful male (plakat type) giant. He is bit younger than the others and seems to just want to chase his females around and not get down to breeding. A stunning fish though with great genes potential. If I can get him breeding with a good long finned giant female the long finned offspring should be spectacular.

I am very excited about my first seemingly successful breeding of giants. It is with the plakat giant red male betta below and a long finned multi coloured female. The eggs are due to hatch today.

this is a truly stunning male. better than the picture. just hope the hatch goes OK and I will have a few hundred giant baby bettas, long finned reds and other colours. |

The current crop of babies I have are all from the male below. A normal size betta (and my first attempt). There are over 100 babeis about 2 months old, up to nearly an inch. They are already starting to show a wide range of colours - fascinating.

just to explain to those not in the know, what a half moon (abbreviated HM) betta is.
Notice the tail finnage onthe betta above. it is half of a circle. that is the half moon finnage. this is far differnet from the lower quality betas usually sold in shops. you get these through the hobbyist network, or specialists like kg bettas. they are much more beautiful than normal veiltail or delta bettas. |

I have worked out an easy cheap method of keeping male bettas (to seperate them) it gives them plenty of room and only 20p each.
It only works for open topped aquariums. you need 20p bottles of sainsburys cheap lemonade, a soldering iron and short bamboo canes or plant stakes.
First drian out the lemonade or force a sugar rush and premature diabetes on the kids by getting them to drink it all. then rinse out.
cut with scissors around the top leaving a half inch hinge (so that can then bend backwards to put the fish in). you can feed through the top (obviously discard the bottle top). next in the bottom use your soldering iron to burn plenty of drainage holes which allows fresh tank water in and wast out. then burn near the top (just below the cut around) 2 holes through which you thread the bamboo canes. You can put several bottles along the cane. then suspend in your tank.
the males have plenty of room and the females swim freely around them. works great for my fish.

yipee, the yellow male (top picture) is breeding right now (as i type) with a long finned HM mulicolour female. just seen the first 50+ eggs drop down. Amazing. Now I just hope both are fertile.
2 crops of giant betta fry at once. |

here are pictures just taken of the 20p method of keeping males seperate. Masses more room than you get in those little traps.

this is my conditioning and adult stock tank. i look and see which fish fancy each other (they have individual tastes and prefences) and if it fits into what i am trying to breed, i isolate them together in well planted tanks (plenty of hiding places for a breather for the female) for breeding.
i use the same bottle method to house the female in front of the male to get him bubble nest building. |

nice setups yanton, looks like youve put some time into it and its paying off, not i big fan of the normal bettas but some of them are so stunning your making me think about getting some imported |

Its great watching the youngsters grow. 100 young siamese fighters, all different variations of colours. I must check on them about 10 times a day. |

Stunning! If only I had the time/money/space. |

|
stunning fish + much better than most lfs setups yanton + i know you look after ya fish but i still think its cruel to keep fish no matter what fish in such cramped conditions |
10-09-2007 23:35 by -Rob C-
|
Telboy, bettas naturally don't have lots of space, so they won't be too bothered about that. Using bottles is the only realistic way of keeping these fish when breeding unless you want to spent loads on a setup with lots of small tanks, which would work out about the same size anyway. |
11-09-2007 00:43 by telboy
|
yeah i know that rob,but still seems cruel to me,especially in lfs when they keep em in a row in those tiny pots not much bigger than a pint glass... |

|
what sort of prcies are you paying for them if you dont mind me asking |
11-09-2007 15:21 by yanton
|
shipping is about £25
up to 6 in a box.
this male was expensive (a very special rare fish) at approx £30. Females are £15.
Show quality half moon bettas (not giants) cost around £12 each. |
11-09-2007 17:32 by robert.pope
|
in comparrison its alot cheaper than say breeding discus.....and they dont require as much space!
i must admit in the shops i have visited im my 10 years keeping fish i have not yet seen these fih in jars that peeps talk about |

Yanton
out of intrest with the males being able to see one another do they not show off/try to fight all the time?
i have never kept them so im asking as a novice |
11-09-2007 19:28 by yanton
|
they show off a bit, but only occasionally through the day, they get used to their neighbours.
they show off more when a female swims by, or when the single free swimming male checks them out. |

|
Do the halfmoons breed true, or do you only get a few from each batch of fry? |
12-09-2007 07:25 by yanton
|
It depends on the pedigree line of the parents.
My current batch of 100+ babies seems to be showing at least 50% halfmoon, and the others delta type tails. |

Any luck yet in breeding them Yanton?
I am trying to breed a pair of Fighters but not having much luck. Hopefully I have managed to source two pairs of Betta Simplex for one of my other tanks to give them a go at breeding as well |
15-10-2007 17:21 by yanton
|
yes i have about 75 youngsters. the largest are already 1cm. some are just starting to show some colour. they are definately growing quicker than standard bettas.
best betta forum is: http://z7.invisionfree.com/BettaBreeders/index.php
something else i have found interesting is that plakat giant bettas (these ar ethe group i have focused on now) can be kept together males and females as long as you have about 4 males or more. they do get some frayed fins initially, but after a few days finally realise they are getting nowhere scrapping and settle down - just sparring and retreating. like a shoal of tiger barbs, the more you have, the better they are as a group. |

|
Yanton, how big a tank do you use for breeding them once you have selected a viable pair? |
15-10-2007 19:31 by yanton
|
a 3ft tank with lots of cover for the female (i use lots of artificial plants). |
15-10-2007 19:53 by Nick G
|
I have ste up four different sized tanks a few months ago in my garage to try my hand at breeding different fish, definately going to give betta's a real good go (always been a favourite) and I have 2 pairs of Simplex on their way to me which I hope to get going aw well.
I think the bottle pictures you posted are a great idea, especially as they allow the pairs to form and you can choose to breed them if you so desire. Will set that up myself in the future some time.
Do you still keep your Tangynikans? |
15-10-2007 20:49 by yanton
|
got no tanganyikans any more - great fish though.
too many fish-types, too little time.
i am fancying setting up a mixed cichlids tank for severums, firemouths, jewels, etc. |
15-10-2007 21:48 by Nick G
|
You have done a lot of switching in the last year or so, marines, tangs etc. Know what you mean though, had community in my main tank, then now have tengs and toying with switching to malawi's. Must have cost you a fair penny or two |

They're beautiful. Are you selling the spawn? If so, when?
Thanks. |
